Teenage Engineering OP-Z

hehe yeah basically… but i guess you can say its a midi looper

i Would say the new MPC´s are the best for importing midi data…

The OP-Z sequencer is more abstract. i love it, but it certainly isnt everyones cup of tea

Yeah so Ive heard but I was hoping for something smaller than an MPC or Elektron.

It is a live looper in that it has a buffer of last 10 seconds that you can use in very interesting ways.

But it isn’t a traditional looper. You cannot record audio and keep looping it endlessly. If you alter tracks sent to the tape track then the loop will pick up those changes (but not as overdubs).

It would be great if the tape track did have a looper mode…

This module looks so promising. I’m really excited for more detail on how you can split tracks to outputs and fx loop possibilities. Midi out is also a bonus for me.

It seems really odd to me that they don’t mention anything about sampling from lime in, since it can already sample from the mic input on the headphones and the USB surely it couldn’t be that hard to add sampling from the line in on this module?

That would be kind of a big step up and make it into an actual sampler+synth combo, but they don’t talk about that at all in the description as far as I could see.

Sounds similar to the thru machine with cue out and from the OT

I just picked up an op-z even tho I said I wouldn’t (I got to play with one in person and fell in love) and I will likely grab this new module to use with a dfam :star_struck:

This is definitely interesting!

Besides the new module features, this also means that the op-z can receive audio from modules, so synths modules can be possible!

i think the whole preview description is unclear but based on the details found in the last major update it seems like this is definitely possible and they just failed to describe what the heck is going on

  • input signal improvements:
  • controlled via i/o track (hold shift to select source)
  • allow multiple input sources active
  • input monitoring on all input signals, not just usb.
  • make audio mute work on all tracks

reading stuff like that makes me think that some of those tweaks were laying groundwork for the new module and the extra input will be available for selection too

the main thing baffling me is: why not make it capable of 2 independent outs?

I’m not an engineer so correct me if I misunderstand but if the line in and line out are trrs couldn’t they both be in and out?

Alternatively could the two existing outs be used as 4 mono outs?

Yes you can pan each of the outputs to get 4 mono out

I wonder if the new routing will also be available over USB. 2+2 over USB is pretty good, but 4+4 would be way better.

I also hope they make sampling easier. A threshold trigger would be enough.

No its 2+2

But you can now use the OP-Z as an audio Interface with effects.

I don’t think my dreams of sampling per pad will ever happen. Need to adjust my mindset on that.

yeah @dhunterrr
i can see where they are coming from though…basically the sampling system on op1 and opz are the same (i don’t know if po-33 is different so they could have borrowed something from that if they chose)

it would surprise me if TE deviated from the style that has worked for many years on the OP series

@MichaalHell thanks for giving some info about this
i’ll wait to hear more but that has me a bit more optimistic

The new module seems nice! If I were to ever buy an op-z again, this module would be a no-brainer to also get.

maybe they will do a bundle price (as I agree, this is the IO most will want)

This worked well for me and my OP-Z is up and running again

that’s a beaut
