Teenage Engineering OP-XY

My theory is that it’s a metal chassis that the OP-Z can dock into via the expansion port, making it into an OP-XYZ. It adds a screen/XY-grid. It also replaces the need for modules because it builds in all of the add-on modules into the device and makes the overall look and feel of a higher build quality.

They have already confirmed they are working on a new op-z with a release date around this time, so creating just a module doesn’t sound accurate. Even if it’s not an op-z we do know they are working on a new op-z, which means releasing some new module before its release wouldnt make sense either.

you are onto something

idk, my read on their comments is much more “i am leaking info and feel very cool” than it feels like a business plan. either way, the rumor mill is spinnin’ hot

i love this idea which is how i know it wont happen~! lol
I think part of the shortcomings of the OPZ was the module bay. Im pretty sure the giant gaping hole in the middle of the unit isnt helping the warping issues. I cant see them doubling down on it with so many defective units out there. My cvgatemidi module has a hard time staying connected and requires my unit to not be moved when its connected correctly at boot. not reliable at all (and yes its the updated version.) I think an opz with all three modules in there, a better chassis more like 133, op1, or beatstep (plus xtra outs) would be awesome! I just have a hard time thinking they are gonna support the z any longer after so much radio silence. The workflow is amazing though!

totally agree with you on that.

Oh I’d definitely love an OP-Z successor. It’s still the most inspiring gear I’ve ever used.

Slots in only if not bent.
Here you can buy a new one.
Oh we’ve increased the price by a third due to parts shortages.

I know for certain that whatever it is, it’s going to be missing the most obvious features/specs

Congratulations!
I wish I could sell my opz & op1 but the battery’s are dead in both :see_no_evil:

Hmmmmm, interesting. I was already about to sell my OP-Z. Even without hearing this news. I even have a buyer lined up. Prices already dropped staggeringly. Good timing I suppose, if a successor is on its way.

I think I actually have an extra new opz battery around here somewhere and already sold my opz… interested? I would sell it to you cheap if I can find it.

maybe reading tea leaves- heard from my retailer a few weeks ago that my Tp-7 rma would take ages because they’re having a ‘supply chain meltdown’…
so maybe they’re running the malaysia line at capacity with this new product. i think the ko-ii is made in barcelona. if my thinking is correct this should suggest what side of the te pricing spectrum this will fall on.

Maybe we will see an announcement here? A design exhibition in Tokyo called Designtide and it’s the 27 November so seems likely. TE posted it on their instagram.

It is going to be announced Thur Nov 7th at 6 am PT/9 am ET if I was a betting man. First off, TE always announce Thursdays, almost always at 6am PT/ 9 am ET. Second, the reddit leaker who we all think at this point works for TE said a couple weeks for it to be announced. Also, the 27th is pretty late in the holiday season for releases in the states. I do think they show it off at the Tokyo exhibit, but the announcement will be online etc as always.
