Teenage Engineering OP-XY

what are the destination options ?

Nice jam. This is your first jam? impressive.
And thanks for the kind words. I am glad you like the presets.

First jam but I think that I have watched all YouTube content / tutorials about it since the release. Also, the OPZ was my first hardware groovebox so I was already familiar with most concepts. And your synth engines presets are a cheat code! Keep up the good work

I’m doing my best  I also had the OP-Z before, and it’s true — it makes getting into the OP-XY world much easier.

Hi everyone,

I’m working with a Teenage Engineering OP-XY and running into a challenge. When I create a track on the OP-XY, I can only export it as a stereo file, which makes it tricky to separate and arrange tracks later in Ableton. Right now, my workaround is to record each track individually, which is a bit tedious.

I’m wondering if anyone here has found a smarter workaround for multi-track exporting or if there’s any known solution in the community. Also, does anyone know if Teenage Engineering has mentioned any plans to support multi-track USB audio output in the future?

Thanks for any tips!

Especially it gets challenging if you have a longer arrangement in the op-xy.

I’ve got a little something in the works for OP-PatchStudio that will help automate this.

That would prevent me from buying the Digitakt II

That would be fantastic!"!

I backed out of the October xy sale last minute but still intrigued… One thing that stopped me was the slightly convoluted sample management for recorded samples. I’m wondering if always saving samples I’ll use to a preset would make things easier. IIRC, samples are copied to a preset folder if saved to a preset. Does this mean I’m safe to delete the original sample? And would moving the preset to a different folder break any projects that I’m using it in? It’s also highly possible I’m making this a bigger deal than it actually is in practice

No, it’s a pretty big deal, imho.
Saving a collection of samples as a preset is a good idea, as the samples are copied into the new preset folder. However, saving a new sampler preset puts the preset in the snapshot folder. If you load that preset into a project from the snapshot folder, the project will “expect” the preset to always be sitting in this folder. Move the preset into another folder, say a folder named “drumkits”, the project won’t be able to find it when you load it up. You have to load the preset to the track again from it’s new location in the “drumkits” folder.
Therefore, the least frustrating method to make sample based music on the OP-XY I’ve found is to separate sampling sessions and composition sessions. Take some time to create a few nice drum kits or sample presets, save them as presets, make a few folders in the user folder like “drumkits”, “sliced breaks”, “FX samples”, or whatever you like, and populate the folders with presets using a computer by dragging all the presets you created from the snapshots folder to their new home.
Then it’s nice and easy to make music. It takes a bit of the fun and spontaneousness out of the process that some musicians thrive on. On the other hand, having a bunch of well put together kits ready to go is a good method to focus on composition.

As an idea you can make an aggregate audio device on Mac where you can combine the op-xy ( usb-c ) and your audio interface. Then route multi out to your audio interface, then you will have 2 channels to work with at the same time, some time to setup but in the end you will be twice efficient.

Thats a great idea. Especially with most important 2 tracks to have the automation and step components running correctly together. Thanks for the tip!

Wanted to share my rhodes multisample instrument.
