Teenage Engineering OP-XY

How would you guys go about setting up this stuff?

OP-XY
Op-1f
TX-6

Chroma Console
Microcosm

Would it make sense to have Micro/Console going into the bus on the TX-6? Actually, I’m not sure if we can put one or two fx into the TX-6 bus.

You can modify the LFO one. I discovered this the other day. Go into the punch in fx aux and hit M4. Then this is the second key in the octave (f#).

The LFO doesn’t have all of the options, but you can set it to modify pitch, etc.

If you’re in the instrument you can hold shift and hit the keyboard to activate the punch-in fx. The lower octave for that individual instrument and the upper will impact all instruments in that group (instrument or percussion).

Cool. Thanks for the tip.

In my opinion, the Digitakt 2 is a better straight up sampler.

But, the OP XY only needs a few additional things to make its overall sampling (and additional synth and performance stuff etc) a really good package.

There’s currently no real sample chop ability and you can’t use the step sequencer to amend the start point. So the types of sample exploration and tweaking I do on the M8 and OT can’t be done on the OP XY as well. What I’ve found though, is the OP XY can do stuff that makes even simple loops interesting in a performance using step components, Performance FX etc. The workflow is quick and enjoyable with many different options.

I think i’ll keep my eye on the OP-XY’s fw updates and see how it develops in the areas im interested in before i get it. I’ve seen/heard quite a few videos on it but have found the synths not to be to my liking (like the rest of the TE music line), but the size, versatility, depth and FUN-NESS of it is irresistable.
I recently ordered the Sonicware Cydrums, which is portable little thing which appears to be able to produce some super intersting things sonically, which id just feed into the OP-XY or sample for use on the XY.
How often have TE promised to update the FW on the XY? - ia there like a monthly cycle of updates or something?

I don’t think TE discloses much about future updates. There’ll definitely some bug fixes and there’s been mentions of a drum synth, but I’m not sure what else there’ll be. Others on this forum probably have more insight than me on that.

I would say though, nothing is guaranteed with TE. The KO2 is still awaiting promised updates over a year later.

just as a reference: downloads op-z

OP-Z got 17 firmware updates in about 3.5 years

I mostly use the OP-XY as a sample player. I’ve never used a DT2, but I’ve owned a DT1 before.

The thing I dislike most about the DT and OP-1 is how the tracks are mono. The only way to avoid issues with cutting off tails of looped samples is to use 2 tracks.

It’s a really basic thing, but having polyphony on samplers like the SP-404 or OP-XY allows me to use samples how I like easily.

I also really like the fidelity of the OP-XY and how its DACs sound. My samples sound really good coming out of it and I’m always using the filters and master FX because I think they sound superb.

I have super basic needs when it comes to samplers though. I’m usually always persuaded by lo-fi mojo, but the OP-XY has its own unique hi fidelity, but also gritty mojo. I think things can sound really polished straight out of it without additional processing.

My second day with the Teenage Engineering OP-XY, and I am loving it!

This time I have sampled my Sequential Prophet 6 for the bass, and used the same acoustic guitar sample from my previous video for the arpeggio-like sound - this time, I used the FANTASTIC “maestro” feature - which I have seen folks dismissing as just a “chord mode”, when in practice it allows Ominchord-like strumming and can make things sound gorgeous!

I agree, I used to think the original Digitakt had a hifi sheen, EQ or something but was surprised how my DT II sounds a little muddy after coming back to it from the XY. They definitely have different sound signatures. Even the KO has some sort of behind the scenes polish and pump to the sound.

If you don’t like polyphonic synths or creating your own multisample synths, DT is a better one shot drum machine that doesn’t have very good sample chopping, any chord modes, good time stretch, or overdub looping for some reason.

Narrator: The reason is product segmentation.

Another thing about the OP-XY is how clutch the auxiliary tracks are. In conjunction with the ability to smoothen parameter lock transitions, it is so easy/natural to get automations sounding how you want for things like volume, FX send amount, reverb decay, delay time, etc.

The DT2/DN2 lack the ability to automate FX like the Syntakt can, but with the Syntakt, it felt finicky for me to get the LFOs to do what I wanted at times. Often, it just felt like a compromise.

This is another example of a relatively simple implementation that makes a huge difference for me and my simple needs.

Looks like a new version of Field Kit was released yesterday, update on the App Store if you haven’t already. Only change is:

  • fixed an issue with mounting stop on older MacOS versions.

are T.E likely to increase the number of filters allowed per track? or, more importantly could the hardware manage this?

I’m surprised there is no new/updated version of the d-box drum synth on the xy, that was a real favourite of mine at least on the OP-1.
Spent hours on that :ok_hand:

Not complaining here just an observation :eyes:

AFAIK a drum synth engine is coming.

You can have two filters per track. The M3 one and the one in the instrument preset settings.

Grown man using emojis here, what is happening to me?

I’ll gladly pay for an app if TE releases a companion app, or an app that offloads some of the stuff that can’t be done onboard on the XY and, easily syncs to the device.

  • sample chopping
  • warping
  • sample management
  • deeper synth access (sound design)
  • additional efx and filters
  • project org / backup
  • editor / additional punch-in fx
  • stems separation
  • multi-tracking

Make the XY fully extensible. Even better create an “App Store” for it, but I doubt this can happen. Doesn’t seem to be open that way. Just surprised that even with two CPUs I’m getting that dreaded red CPU warning sign and if I have 2 samples or more that are unprocessed offline, stutters are happening.
