Though this looks like a ARP 2500 it’s not. It’s based on different modules from Analogue Solutions. But given the extensive pin matrix interface the operation is somewhat similar to a 2500.
Whoa £22k is A LOT of money for a synth. I saw the £5k listed at the top and thought “not bad” until I realized that it wa just the deposit amount!
It’s cool that they’re making it but sad that very few people will actually get to play it. The 2500 was Éliane Radigue’s main instrument so I would love to hear one in person.
I’ve always wondered how many of their larger synths they’ve sold, like the Colossus. Also wonder if universities or other type of educational programs are some of their better clients. I assume they did well to continue development of higher end synths. Im happy that they seemingly are in a place where they can put out synths that appear to be passion projects to the design team.
I like the expression Tom uses in the video, “people chasing the price to zero”. He clearly likes the freedom in design he gets with this scale, being able to concentrate on design alone, rather than design-cost-manufacturing volume-competition. That said they do design great stuff for the desktop too.
I’ve half seriously got the PS-3300 penciled in to my synth budget a few years out, but I could see swapping it out for this, depending on how much of a not-2500 it turns out to be.
I wouldn’t bet on universities buying any of these - maybe Alumni donations, but as cool as this is it isn’t really pushing the state of the art of electronic music/audio. It is more of a synth-shaped art object. Much like a really nice Ducati, except that while it might destroy your hearing it probably won’t turn you into a sausage creature.
Éliane Radigue was among the synth pioneers that got me interested in experimental music, so a not-2500 has a certain emotional resonance for me.
But this is a fascinating synth. Seems like the kind of thing you’d have to learn over a long time span and make it you primary instrument, like Radigue, to justify the cost (and studio real estate!)
