Tasty Chips ST4

WOAH, I love this thing.
Seems perfect.

That’s no moon, it’s a space station!

I forgot about this thing and was just reminded.

Kickstarter page now says final product will be smaller than the demo unit.

I submitted some questions to the Kickstarter project about sampling and MIDI parameter control.

According to someone else who contacted them, it will have a song mode (pattern chaining), but no word on how many patterns.

Sounds a little lo-fi but I adore the concept.

So far my Octatrack has been sufficient for my sequencing needs, which are super basic. It’s actually a little overpowered for that.

But if I need more sequencing, I can deploy my Korg M3 61 workstation. It does have a couple of disadvantages though:

  1. Size. Takes more space in my car than the ST4, and is not convenient to carry onto public transit.

  2. Sound is Hi-Fi - the opposite “problem” compared to the ST4. It’s a fixable problem - just requires menu-diving

  3. No convenient polyrhythm support (as promised by the ST4 guys anyway - their idea of “convenient” might turn out to be some convoluted ritual) like the ST4. Users have to either solve math problems to find common denominators and such - or record in real-time.

The ST4 looks easier to transport, can produce LoFi sounds more easily, and has polyrhythms (in theory).

I got answers within 12 hours of posting my questions to their Kickstarter project:

Can sampling be triggered by MIDI command?
Yes

What is the max recording time when sampling?
Max recording time is 3 seconds. It’s primarily intended for percussion and wavetable type samples, not for layering minute long ambient sounds.

How many patterns in a song?
There’s room for 128 different patterns and these can be freely arranged into 1024 song “positions”.

Can LFOs, filters, and VCAs be modulated by MIDI? (because, no motion sequence or p-lock type shit)
What an excellent idea! We’ll bake in a CC for that! Also, you can record while the sample is playing.

What about this device?
Anyone got one?

At the time I was fascinated by the concept but the price and the total absence of reviews and demos stopped me.

I almost bought one. At €899, it was almost a no-brainer.

With all the new hardware trackers now on the market (Polyend Tracker, Dirty Wave M8, XOR Nerd SEQ Portable), I wonder if Tasty Chips might re-launch this?

damn. hadn’t seen this 1 before, but would be sick if tasty chips brought it back in some way. lots of new love for trackers and would be cool to see some of their other successful ideas integrated into it. wonder how many of these are in the wild?
