Tasty Chips GR-1 : Hardware Poly Granular Synth

about the same here, so no problem i guess

ah ok, cool!

I had a similar thought recently, but I think it was always that way. Just timed mine and it took about 20 seconds of a blank screen before the splash screen sequence starts up. Then another 25 or so for that to play and load the performance.

yeah, checks out. Mine is about 40-45 seconds, just timed it

And that’s not all. From the latest update on the GR-MEGA :

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

ADDED : August 22nd.

Another update today on the GR-MEGA that includes more good news on the port of code to the GR-1.

Also they report that they have the multitimbral parts already working. They are finishing up the MIDI support for this and say they will have good news in September.

Me speculating, maybe a beta release, it seems too quick for a full release, but we’ll see what they say in September !

One of my favourite pieces of hardware ever. Has it’s downs in terms of stability and CPU, but the good stuff is so good that it justifies having to sacrifice a goat to the blood gods everytime when powering it on. I’ve been using it tons on my videos at https://www.youtube.com/@resonanthousemusic for both due to my love towards it as well as making proper in-context sound demos with it.

Or at least consider that option given that the firmware is getting a complete rewrite in version 3, with lots of major improvements imported from the GR-MEGA.

While the GR-1 is an excellent granular synthesizer - opposed to the S-4, which only features rather limited granular effect on top of a rather simple sampler - I never got used to the UI of the GR-1. And the effects and filter were so limiting, and with only a stereo out, there’s no way around that for multitimbral use.

I really don’t mind a bit of menu diving, but the structure of the menu and the navigation with one knob didn’t work out for me. The way knobs are assigned either to effects or the filter, and I had to go to the menu to change that drove me nuts. No MiDI control of all parameters either, so I could not work around that. Navigation of the mod matrix is really tedious, too.

Last but not least, for a multitimbral instrument, faders and knobs don’t really cut it, encoders work so much better.

And it was so easy to accidentally lose sounds because I hit the wrong button when triggering sounds.

Most of that might not be so much of an issue when one can afford more time for making music, but sadly, I can’t these days.

I must admit the interface of the S-4 is not perfect either, some of little inconsistencies and odd choices, overall it just works better for me, and the number of modulators and effects make sculpting sounds a lot easier, even though the sampler and granular effects are a bit underwhelming, and can’t really compare to the GR-1.

Hadn’t heard about the re-write when I wrote that, so maybe it will change things. But most of the UI will probably stay the same.

They haven’t been making a lot of noise about that, but there is info out. It’s just not in super detail, on what exactly the new GR-1 is going to be.

Actually it sounds ( to me ) like a lot will be changing. Maybe the change will not be for the better as they will be shoe-horning some functionality into the existing physical control architecture. It does sound like the file management system will be changing and improving though.

People will certainly have the option to not upgrade if they are happier with the original software.

So there is a lot up in the air and a lot changing which may affect a lot the things that you are pointing out that you don’t like.

I’ve been wondering that since the GR-MEGA code has been redone from the ground up in a different programming language, is the new GR-1 code also, at least partially, in a new programming language. Seems like it probably is.

Anyways, it is a bit of a mystery, and perhaps will be less of a big deal than the perception i get from their update notices. Sounds like we should be getting more information soon though.

I will certainly watch this, because the S4 is definitely not a granular sampler with the current selection of devices. I’ll expand on that in the other thread.

New firmware: GR-1 Update 3.0

Has anyone been able to upgrade to 3.0.x? I’m getting the ā€œbroken tgz fileā€ message and not really sure where to go next to troubleshoot, having already tried downloading the file using both Firefox and Chrome. The manual seems to say the next option is to reflash the internal SD, which feels a bit extreme as a next step.

Update: I tried to update using the LAN port and got the same error, which suggests I need to go the reflash route…

Yeah I upgraded mine. Usual process via USB iirc. It now remembers your last loaded project, which is worth it in itself.

I was having the same problem, so I went with reflashing the SD. I was hesitant to open it up at first, but it actually was really easy and worked without issue.

Same here! I emailed TC and got an immediate reply that reflashing was the way to go. Turns out it’s way simpler than I first thought when I read the instructions. The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes in total and most of that time is just waiting for the card to get loaded via the software.

Pieter at TC mentioned they are planning to make a video soon about this, so anyone who is hesitant could wait for that.

Yeah, the manual make the procedure seem more scary than it actually is. In fact the hardest thing is to open up the device and even that is not a problem.

Do you feel v 3.0 is materially better?

I just got my GR-1 a week ago so my experience with the older firmware is very little. But i like the new menu system and the bigger font size. And small things like an icon is showing when you’re saving. And it’s 4 time multitimbral but i haven’t checked that out yet.

The file management change is a nice improvement although I’m still getting used to it. The use of the new Slot naming convention is a little confusing addition since I think they’re using it simply as another word for Performance. Still need to dig into this, but I think we may have lost the ability to save individual Patches outside of Performances, which is unfortunate for creating template patches but manageable.

Overall, having a safe shut down procedure that also opens up your last used Performance is a huge benefit. I think I’ve lost a lot of work in progress pre-3.0 that didn’t seem to save correctly.
