Tascam Model 12

I think it sounds like a pretty natural fit for your needs—you seem to want to use it for exactly what it’s best at. But you can probably tell from this thread that I’m biased.

I will say… As much as I love my Model 12, I’ll admit that I don’t use it much anymore. Partly because disk space is getting more expensive so 12 tracks in a song is starting to get hard to handle. Partly because I find it’s fun for mixing stuff and remixing stuff and using FX sends and whatnot, but is very bad (for me) for getting tracks finished. But also because the Model 12 isn’t great at doing multiple takes, and I’m not a good enough singer to nail a performance in one go.

Oh, that’s something to keep in mind—the Model 12 lets you punch in and out, but if you do it too many times it’ll start throwing disk errors.

In general, the Model 12 can cough up disk errors under heavy use. Mainly if you’re doing a lot of detailed editing and jogging around back and forth in the transport a lot. It doesn’t like that. It’s very much like a tape machine in that way too—you really have to get good a waiting a few seconds for the playhead to adjust after you move it, or it may well glitch. It doesn’t react fast like a DAW does.

I don’t think I’ve ever lost data that way, but I have blown out my ears a bunch from the sudden burst of static when the card glitches out.
