Hi! I’m asking European fellows mostly. I see many producers/mixers using a thinner, later easier removable (hopefully) paper label strip on devices eg. on Octatrack to label uniquely tweaked tracks on the empty spaces. What brand, type of tape do you use? I don’t want to screw myself upon removal and want to avoid damage.
I’ve not done it myself but masking tape / painter’s tape would be my go to. It’s meant to be temporary and to stop paint going on different areas of a canvas / wall etc. Is that what you mean?
Yes, US ppl use the HOSA LBL500 but I can’t find it in Europe. Usually there are favourites among audio people, but wasn’t sure which one is here. Most important to avoid corrosion on the paint of the device when you keep the label for years.
I’d use Frog Tape Yellow Delicate Surface Painters Masking Tape. Expensive but less likely to leave residue or lift ink from precious gear. Regardless, I wouldn’t leave any tape on gear for extended periods. I’d also write on tape and let ink dry before applying it to gear to minimise bleed through.
This tape is what you want. Don’t use any masking tape from the hardware store.
Whoah crazy link!
Nice!
Risky too with dickblick as the URL
Gaffers tape is my go-to. You can get white gaffers tape, 1” width from Amazon. I would not use masking tape. Often Photography shops carry it.
Why though? Judging by the description this seems similar to hardware store masking tape.
Masking tape goes hard and brittle and leaves a residue if left in place too long. Console tape, and I think this is the same as Artists tape, just peels off after months, no marks. Bloody pricey though.
@brucegill said what I would have. Even the fancy painter’s tape that costs just as much as the artist tape/console tape is more likely to leave some junk behind. Regular off-white masking tape turns disgusting with slimy glue over time. So when you use that the label you make now comes with an extra chore later. A couple bucks more out of pocket for a one time expense (you can label an octatrack about 180 times from one roll) is nothing versus potential time wasted removing gunk from nice gear. If time is money you definitely save on the artist tape.
If you’re curious and have the time, take some masking tape and leave it on something for months to a year. The adhesive will bond more permanently and the tape substrate will crumble in unpleasant ways
not saying it’s the best or all that smart but I just use cheap washi tape - I like the fact it comes off very easily, comes in colours that can contrast gear nicely etc
I use this. Cheap and no residues.
This!
