So good ![]()
There’s a thread for this:
Could this be more related to the man rather than the machine? (ie could be the Takeo thread).
Great vid btw, @neilbaldwin. Insane that’s coming from one machine! Makes me want to get one!
Really love the music and the chosen location, they feel good

I was amazed at what he coaxes out of a single Volca Drum.
Annoying, he was obviously at the front of the queue when god was slicing the talent-pie… and the greedy git ate the whole thing ![]()
I love absolutely everything I’ve ever heard this man put out. I’m so down for a dedicated Takeo Watanabe thread.
A true master!
He’s also dropped some albums, although somehow it feels less impresive than watching the man rocking a machine live, vibrating to his music, in the nature ^^
I actually own piece of my scape. It’s so good start to finish.
I didn’t know the man, thanks for this thread. It is both humbling and makes me want to make music.
Interestingly, he seems to mainly use inexpensive machines, and seldom more than 2.
These videos are a good reminder that if you (well, I) really mean to make music, you don’t need to be rich and own 20 synths. There are many cheap options on the market, and sometimes they even surpass the flagships - perhaps due to their limitations?
Volca Drum, Volca FM, Model:Cycle, RazzMatazz, CyDrums, PO-32, etc.
(By the way, is there already an “inexpensive greatness” thread or something along this line?)
So you might want create your own new Mission Briefs dedicated to creations with smaller/cheaper gear ![]()
I also bought his first two albums right after they came out. Really, really good. He‘s an inspiration.

Absolutely, definitely the Master of this machine!
Lovely flow and use of one-off musical flourishes - very inspiring.
Not sure if this is embarrassing or a sign of humbleness but I literally have an sp404 mkii coming after watching his workflow (though not really understanding the role of the sp404). Embarrassing to copy someone but perhaps humble to be able to admit that someone else is making far better music with far less gear. So…
No embarrassment - good to find inspiration, especially on his level!
Here’s another one:
Thank you!
I had seen this one and found it very interesting.
But the machines I mentioned are not really synths as such, rather drum machines or grooveboxes. So I didn’t have much to contribute.
Not sure the SP404 does so much, there are chances it’s mainly used as a sample player, with FX being the part that moves…
Ah, got it. I tend to lump all electronic music devices into one category in my head without any clear boundaries, my bad…
