decently different. TEO is closer to the OB6. the X8 doesn’t have the option to sweep through the SEM filter type.
@operon there’s some videos on YT of Prophet 6 versus OB6. you may want to watch those. Take 5 and TEO are basically variants of those two synths. (although now I see you bought a Take 5 so maybe this doesn’t matter, or maybe it’ll help solidify your decision…)
The TEO seems to have a wider range, with the flexibility of the SVF and the xmod that lets you weird things up without going out of tune. One small disadvantage is that the tune knobs are weird, covering several octaves in a single knob. Prefer the T5 system with octave switches.
Thanks, man. I love these two synths. I’ve been listening to a lot of library music and early 1980s cassette tape era ambient lately, like this excellent collection from Soul Jazz Records I just picked up, and I think these synths will be perfect for this kind of vibe as well. Not too far off from the vibe the OP is going for I think.
I think that a 4-pole filter with self-resonance is more versatile than a 2-pole filter without self-resonance. It shows in the bigger models at least: Prophet rev 4 is more versatile in timbre than OB-X8, even though the latter is indeed more versatile in temperature (warm to cold). I would expect this differentiation to transcend to the “T-Duo”.
In the end, Jerry has to choose between a dark coat (think of George’s amazingly thick winter coat) and a bright blanket (think of Elaine’s beautiful Christmas card). A difficult choice, as we know from the original story.
Personally I think a morphable 2 pole filter offers more sound design options than a standard 4 pole. You can sort of do bandpass on the T5 but it burns the FX slot. Those Oberheim filters sound great to my ear even without self resonance. YMMV
Yeah that track stayed in my head for a good chunk of the day. If you have more like that somewhere I’d love if you could point me to it. I’ll look into that soul jazz rec comp too.
I’ve never used a Take5 (sadly) but seeing as it has a lot of prophet dna it makes perfect sense for this sort of music. Unlike the prophet5, which I’ve had access to at several times in the past, I wasn’t intimately familiar with the grandmother until about a year ago when my wife got one. Different flavor than I expected, great unique mono that also makes sense in this context.
Cheers man. I really appreciate it. I don’t have any other tracks like that anywhere (yet, haha). I actually planned out a whole concept album in that style and have the track names, storyline, artwork and everything done, but life got in the way of finishing it. That track was meant to be sort of the prequel. Gotta come back to it.
I was really inspired by this film soundtrack at the time.
I highly recommend watching the film Beyond the Black Rainbow (it’s actually up on YouTube) and Season 01 Episode 07 of the show Cabinet of Curiosities (which I think is on Netflix) if you haven’t seen them. Panos Cosmatos’ work (and Sinoia Caves) was a huge inspiration. Take 5 is a perfect fit for that kind of stuff.
Yeah, all the low droning and softer, washed out stuff in the background in that track is from the Grandmother. It’s amazing for that vibe. Feels very old school. I love it.
The Take 5 has one of the rev 4’s filters, that is what you call a “standard” (like in advertising ) 4-pole.
Beyond this, I think one area where the Teo may be objectively more advanced than the Take is the effects section. That can have a dramatic effect (pun intended) on sound, too.
I had a hard time telling what was different on the TEO-5, as the Take 5 got effects like lofi added in the last update. I really wish that the reverb section could be reverb or delay to free up a slot, but not the end of the world, and I have a lot of external effects from my guitar rig.
I have the Take 5, it’s a bit boring in the best way. From initial patch to whatever I can imagine (within the boundries of analog sounds) takes 2-3 minutes tops. It sounds really, really good. It has some form of hi pass on the effect section but If I were shopping for a synth now I would probably take the TEO-5 since you can do more with it’s filter.
Point is, you probably can’t go wrong with either of them.
I just rewatched Beyond The Black Rainbow on Thursday night. Wild movie, and great retro soundtrack! I’d lean more toward the TEO5, but I’d love to see someone make something like the Take 5 retro sound set posted earlier in the thread for the TEO.
Yeah, I remember the same thing. They worded it in a way that sounded like they were different but then when I looked a bit deeper it seemed like they stuff they added in the Take 5 update, like the lofi effect, so was definitely confusing.
I’m sure they will and I imagine the TEO will be a flavor a lot of people like. Nice that we have choices.
I’ve had mine for 2 months, scored a great deal for under £800 on eBay, it needed some cleaning but now it’s brand new!
Sound can go anywhere easily. Assigning modulation is intuitive. The keybed feel with aftertouch is dreamy. You won’t regret it! Here’s a video of me fingering the filter
