Synths that you can connect your iPad to, and do...what?

Hey!
I have a standard 8 gen iPad, and as i see them more and more in regard to music making i was wondering if there are Synths able to connect to it? I know some of my newer ones have class compliant mode, but i would like to know if someone have them connected to their synths, and what you do with them?

Which synths, first.
Second, what do the iPad function as? Controller, bigger display, what?

I would like a bigger screen and more depth of control/ a controller. Something like that.

The ones that possibly could work are my iridium, essence Fm, Uno synth pro x, analog rytm mk2?

Possible?
I run a pc with bitwig as daw so that is out of the connect question i guess, but my antelope Orion 32hd, and my iConnectivity mioXL should be able to work somewhat, at least the latter…

Cheers,
Mbang

i use iPad as main MIDI sequencer for my rig more and more.
it can handle any amount of parameter automation you need, and has all kinds of generative features (euclidean, polyrhythm, arpeggiator of any complexity … you name it).

and iPad can do controller jobs well. i prefer Surface Builder for that.

also i see here and there that many people use iPads as effect processors successfully.
but i avoid that because since it’s a sequencer of live setup – i want my MIDI timing as stable and predictable as possible, and any mixed MIDI/audio jobs involve plugin delay compensation voodoo and cause some amount of latency drift.

Thanks for clarification!
I use a daw so that is enough, but i will check out surface builder definitely!
As for effects, i have more than enough vst plugins that works for me.
Thanks!

Digitone and iPad is an amazing combination. Connects with one cable and then use the Digitone sequencer on any iPad synth you want via the midi tracks in something like AUM. Also fun to use iPad fx to process Digitone sounds and record the result easily in AUM.

Also there is a custom app for Digitone that allows you to easily create patches and extend its functionality.

Very cool, makes me wish i kept my Dtone! Thanks for the tip!

I’m using it with my OP-Z.

The iPad provides a screen and serves for recording and editing the tracks. The OP-Z works as an audio interface so that I can connect my headphones.

Use iPad as a touchosc controller ( or man other control surfaces )

I have messed with synths hooked up to iPad but all that connecting / setup got annoying quickly

When I use iPad now it’s mostly all self contained to spit out stems / loops / weird noise stuff without turning on a daw
Plus many fx are much cheaper on iPad.
If you run an modern mac some fx are also usable on both devices.

If I were using bitwig I’d probably see try iPad as a controller

The DX7 can be entirely controlled with the Dixie App when using a WIDI Master Dongle. Works great.

use it with the m:c and a dreadbox typhon. All audio comes out of the m:c, using only usb. ipad with usb hub and both devices and midi controllers connect to the ipad. dreadbox usb audio in to ipad, ipad audio into m:c Can control stuff from my midi controllers for the m:c and ipad. Like mutes, volume etc. Just got a novation circuit tracks and this also works fine via usb but no audio, it’s two midi tracks controlling synths on the ipad, ipad audio cable into the tracks audio in. Using Drambo as my host there’s plenty of lfo’s and other modulations to assign to m:c or tracks or typhon if needed.

I have my Minifreak usb midi to a hub to use as keyboard and sound source for Drambo. Also an MC101 that I sequence with Drambo. It all works great.

Ok, i see many use the Synths and effects in the iPad, makes sense really for small mobile studios! :slightly_smiling_face:
I cant see myself using it as such, since i build a studio as an immovable object. So i will check out surface builder to see what i can make of it, or experiment with the synths that have class compliant mode inbuilt and what it might bring to the table.

Another question; what extra gear do i need for it? The camera kit, or some usb hub, or… ?

Can you remember what that app was called?

The reference is to Harmonix, but it’s for DN1, and the developer isn’t going to make it work with DN2.

Ok, cool. No worries

Curious to hear if anyone is using any ipad sequencers to send midi to their DN?

I just got a DNII (quickly falling in love), and I’m interested in connecting it to things like Chaos Arp, the X/Y pad in Bleass Arpeggiator, Harmony Bloom,…basically anything that gets away from more conventional, rigid sequencing.

So this is a bit of a stretch, but I am currently connecting my iPad to my Gotharman LD3 via MIDI. I’m using the iPad as a single synth voice with Drambo, and I have one Drambo project for all my LD3 songs in a set/album. You can use the new Layers Switch Drambo module to switch between your created/plugin synths, with only the open layer using the processor. The sequencing is coming from the LD3.

Its really tidy and easy for adding a variety of digital synthesis options. If you use an old iPad with a headphone jack you don’t need an audio interface and have two mono outputs to work with.

As far as the MIDI is concerned, I’m actually sending the LD3’s DIN MIDI to a Faderfox EC4 as part of a MIDI loop. The EC4 is handy because you can connect its USB cable to hardware that can be a MIDI host (like iOS or the MFB Dominion Club). This lets you branch the MIDI and keep a setup tidy. I’m doing this twice in the same setup.

Sweet! Yes, I have a 2018 ipad, with a headphone out.

Drambo scares me. I really want to grok it, because it sounds like once you get your head around it, then you can do whatever your imagination can conjure up.
One day I’ll sit down and attempt to overcome my resistance to it.

If you want to go down the “Use my iPad as a few synths sequenced externally” I’d really recommend Drambo just to host your AUv3s. The Layers Switch is really great for that especially for live performance. And it wouldn’t be a bad way to get your foot in the door learning. Its definitely a complicated and quirky but very powerful beast.

Great.
I’m only really thinking of going out of ipad into DN - as opposed to the other way around - but I’ll definitely look into this aspect of Drambo anyway.
Know if there are any good video tuts on this particular angle?
Cheers!

Yes all the time: ZOA, Fugue Machine, Bram Bros Rozetta and Cong Burn’s Strokes all have at some point made the DN dance. Super easy to setup with AUM. Drambo is fine but you might as well just use the Elektron sequencer becase its mostly the same unless you want to build a custom midi effects rack wich can be fun.
