Synthesizer for experimental idm/trip-hop music

Hello everyone!

The question is about getting a synthesizer for something in the middle of IDM/trip-hop experimental music

I’m really limited with a budget, and already have

Novation Circuit Rhythm for sampling

Korg Kaoss Pad as FX processor

Plan to buy as well a drum machine.

The question is a synth, my idea is to get Arturia minifreak and minilogue xd, but i can afford myself only one at a time, which one would be better to buy firstly to use it until I earn money to fullfill setup with a second?

And is it a good idead to combine this very synths in general?

Also thought about Hydrasynth Explorer, Deepmind and Virus TI)

Thank you for answering)

Given the tight budget, I’ll second the “MPC One + a controller” suggestion and add selling the Circuit to it, but if you want to keep the Circuit and just add a synth the Minifreak would do just fine.

At some point, you’ll also need to budget for a mixer or interface with enough inputs to support your gear. Plan accordingly, it sucks to surprise yourself with another “necessary” $300+ purchase to support the multiple other purchases you’ve made. This honestly makes “MPC One plus a controller” even more attractive both financially and capability-wise.

if you want a SYNTH the microfreak is huge bang for bucks factor and probably good for what you want. keep in mind its limited to 4 note paraphony. minifreak might also be a good option.

Technically it would be
‘MPC One Plus Plus A Midi Controller’

And that is a really good suggestion, negates the need for an additional drum machine. Adds many addition FX, nice synths, can make your own keygroups.

By itself, the Tonverk seems to be the one. It’s not cheap, though.

Minilogue is the only one that’s analog. It sounds great, I would get that. Excellent choice for a first synth. I haven’t tried the XD.

Minifreak I have and it’s very flexible but doesn’t sound very good imo.

Deepmind I tried in a store and didn’t like how it sounded.

Hydrasynth I’ve listened to clips and videos and never heard anything I liked coming from it. Virus, dunno.

Yes, I thought already about selling the circuit rhythm, maybe not for mpc one(uch expensive) but for mpc 1000 or roland sp404
Of course I know i will need a mixer then, more as I plan to add microphone for vocals as well, that’s just not the first on my mind at the moment)

So minilogue is good as minilogue xd?
It’s much cheaper and would be easier to use this and then combine it with minifreak

Nord Drum 3P!

Virus TI is amazing but definitely not budget. Even the Snow is very pricey.

Well xd has the third digital oscillator and some other things. I haven’t tried it. But it’s a similar concept to the minifreak with different digital engines.
