Syntakt Science Lab #9: RS Hard & RS Classic

This is the first time I’ve run ST directly through Boum and it immediately had me thinking about sampling because it is a whole new beast. New life indeed.

I don’t know why I haven’t tried that before.

Interesting finding!
For both RS HARD and RS CLASSIC machines - LFO DEST has SYN:Symmetry destination that is missing on the SYN Page. I assume it is the blank square.

Ha, I noticed that as well! Thought it was a bug. Doesn’t seem to do anything unfortunately

@elxsound I’ve waited 3 years to run ST directly through Boum and I’m also wondering why I didn’t do that before? Great combo!

@PentalagusMusic I’ve been wanting to try a Chroma Console since it came out, but haven’t got one(yet). I can imagine it works really well with ST. I was thinking of finally buying one a few weeks ago but bought an AH+FX instead, which was on sale. It will do the job aswell, but it’s sitting on DN2’s outputs at the moment. Wish they’ve put ARmk2’s analog compressor in it, but the digital one with the analog drive is nice too offcourse. Still tempted to buy a Chroma though…

It’s pretty dang rad. Though I’ve noticed that I have a hard time running a whole track from the Syntakt through it nice and things still sounding all right.
It’s pretty muddy quick with a busy track if you’re trying to use all the effects.
But I’ve still got a way to go before I have some finesse with it.

If I’m doing just the percussion or just a lead or something, it’s really awesome.

Been busy lately, just passing by to say “amazing work” as always. Need to listen more closely!

I guess this has been recorded too loud (clipping?) and not normalized and the mp3 encoder gave it the rest. save your speakers and don’t turn this up too loud. I felt like doing something stupid but didn’t expect anything close to what it has become  (the original on the syntakt sounds less distorted)

that’s 3x RS classic across 6 patterns

edit: this was recorded on the Tonverk and I just noticed it had been recorded with distortion applied from the Tonverk (wrong recording source) which explains a lot… apologies…

This is really cool and unexpected! Love those hollow growls.

Thank you @Nils I appreciate your kind positivity

What I find interesting about the RS Classic engine is how you can turn it into screeching squelchy leads and bass sounds by playing with / modulating SYN balance. need to check out RS Hard more but I agree it’s way more limited in comparison

I’m actually most impressed by the snare sound, if that’s the RS Classic as well

thank you @Oxenholme, it is

Nice! I’d imagine with the noise and the detunable oscillators there’s plenty of snare sounds to be had. I would also try and fm one of the pitches with the other lfo for some more ringing sounds

Nice work
Is this hard or classic?

Thanks.
Drums are made on track 10 RS hard
Revers pad track 11 RS classic
Clave track 9 RS classic.

I have the feeling I already made this beat with another machine:))

3 tracks, RS hard on the beat an classic for the pad and bell sound. Fx track with prob trigs, random lfo on filter cutoff and p locks on the verb send

Uh, I uploaded the wrong recording:))) will do the better one tomorrow!

Another one and I just now realized only after hours of work that I messed up one track on which I accidentally picked SD HARD over RS HARD :man_facepalming:

Hoping it still counts :crossed_fingers:

So, here comes a halfway legit little 129 BPM pattern that uses

  • RS HARD on track 9 (hihats and a rimshot sound that was made to sound like a clap in context). this one uses a neat trick that parameter locks a note repeat at 1/80 rate using the RS HARD’s white noise which is then filtered using a BB filter in order to simulate a clap but was then drowned in too much FX and ended up sounding less like a clap in the end ;p
  • SD HARD on track 10 (kick)
  • RS CLASSIC, a distorted bass with lots of delay at 1/128 delay time

everything is basically built around a single pattern but was spread across patterns 1-5 in order to create a little build-up. other than that, it’s only mutes and volume that were played with during recording.

I also have to admit something - I used a touch of comp and master drive from the DT on this one.
It’s just that the subtle crackles from the p-lock verb is such a nice texture, that I wanted to hear them as a more substantial part of the beat.

This is 3 tracks of RS classic, one is lowpassed with resonance for the subsonic pulse, and the other two go through the fx track with random lfo on filter.

There is random lfo on decay as well to the tracks themselves.

I had one extra lying around  I stole a sentimental melody from an earlier SSL, changed it to RS machines and bathed it in reverb and delay. It breaks off with staccato beats and chords mid-way.
