Syntakt Science Lab #14: BD Hard & BD Silky

Fellow Syntakticants, we need to churn on!

There are many analog bass drums in the Syntakt. After a quick check I decided to group BD Hard and BD Silky. They seem to cover some of the same ground, so I felt that they didn’t warrant two separate labs. Not the most wide ranging machines, but you peeps have suprised me many times before  This means it’s back to three tracks max.

Bd Hard is one of the only machines I’ve never been able to get a high hat out of. This will be an interesting one, I’ll be curious what people can do.

That’s officially a challenge :grinning:

FM it and you shall receive. Beginning is Bd Hard pretending to be a hihat with some filter motion and dirt from the FX track. Second track is also BD Hard with a bunch of P-locks and FM on both tune and panning. Third track is Silky with the bass drum rolls and low ‘melody’. Also FM-ed of course :stuck_out_tongue: Bit of control all halfway through and at the end.

Nice, I just sat down roughly 15 minutes ago and came back seeing your post. Ended up having a similar hi-hat sound by playing a C8 note (octave +3), some HP filter motion and ofc FM modulation

By the way: it’s not the first time I noticed it’s possible to go up/down more octaves by entering keyboard mode than what’s possible by entering a particular note on the trig page (e.g. C8)… is that a bug?

I can imagine that because the range of hihat tones is fairly limited  I got the best ‘noise’ result using the random lfo.

Started out with 1 BDH, but ended up with all 3 BDS

Was wondering the same thing if this is a bug. It sucks that you can’t p-lock on the trig page C8, but you can play it.

Awesome distorted timbres. I love how you make your sounds «crack»

I agree the right channel for this to be communicated to Elektron is via a feature request

(as opposed to reporting it as a bug that playing C8 and above is a possibility)

This was a difficult one for me. A lot of tweaking was necessary to get something half useable.

A funny tune. Spent a looot of time programming all the notes. I could have spent more time creating variation here, but I was just fed up

Distant distorted synth in minor.

Straight up techno. Using the FX track as a “compressor” and a notch EQ to tame the bass (still too much bass though). Lots of drive to get that “glue”.

All straight from the Syntakt.

That little B-section at the end really brings it home. Nice!

This is my fav. Love the melancholic synth sounds and the toms sound great too!

Thought I’d try to make something melodic with these machines - ended up a little clicky in spots so I added delay and tried to lean in lol. (Hard to get that initial transient to smooth out, even when increasing attack time.) Two Silky tracks, one Hard and some Grand Finale in Cubasis:

Tried something a bit more melodic as well. 1 Silky with a bit of tremolo, filter mod and portamento, 1 Hard with a bit of waveform and filter mod and another hard with a bit FM and a highpass filter. And some FX track grit and notch filter mod.

Quicky( in 45min or so, not much time)
1 pattern
track 9: BD Hard : 16steps of drums
track 10 : BD Silky : 34 step bassline
track 11 : BD Silky : 32 step melody
Fx track on bass and reverb.
Little bit of EQ and some limiting, no boum this time  )
(not the best jam, had some trouble keeping the “one” with the odd steps bassline)

Not much time for Science Labs these days

Here’s a rolling techno thing.
2x Silky and 1x Hard.
Using the FX track as an EQ.
Playing around with “blocking” sequencer trigs just holding the track button. Some retrigs and Ctrl-all.

Hope you’re all well. My “Christmas present” for you all is that Sy Bits Science Lab is up tomorrow :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Tons to explore there, so that lab will be running for a while. I hope you dig deep! Trusting @Oxenholme to wipe the table, as we’ve already head some amazing stuff from him using just SY Bits :sunglasses:

Wipe? I’m gonna spread it. 't Is the season!

But looking forward to it! SY Bits is the best.
