Hello, I would like Ableton to sync to the tempo of my Rytm.
I am recording to Ableton Live without Overbridge on a Mac. I am using an Agregat Device composed of the Rytm and a ES-9 from Expert Sllepers.
Rytm is my main Clock. I am passing it over to my Eurorack set by DIN sync. everythin works fine.
I just do not know how I could pass the Rytm’s tempo to Ableton using this setup.
I Use Ableton only for recording! When I am recording Ableton is running at it’s one tempo…
I think it’s probably best to just connect via USB and send the midi clock as well as record the rytm’s audio over USB without overbridge. Live will of course need to be configured to receive clock, and you’ll need to set up a track using rytm as the audio device to record on that track from the USB input.
I think another less efficient way to do this would be use the ES9 midi breakout module and use a splitter cable out of the rytm midi out, so that one direction sends midi clock towards your modular, and the other direction sends midi clock into the ES9, and then have ableton take midi clock from there, but it sounds quite messy to me doing it that way, and I think you’ll get a better result sending clock and audio from rytm via USB.
You may even be able to send your modular summed output into the rytm inputs and that would allow you to either: record the summed output of rytm plus the eurorack all on one stereo track, or you could set up overbridge and then the rytm inputs with the modular audio will record as a dedicated track stem via overbridge.
That is what I thought, but I must be doing something wrong.
In the settings of Live under Midi Ports I ticked the box Sync concerning In: Rytm.
On the Rytm under MIDI Config > Sync I ticked Clock Send
Do I have to do something else?
(example: Live is still running at 80bpm and Rytm at 110bpm while recording)
I’ll probably have to try and see if I can get someone who regularly uses live to help us out.
Just to clarify, are you arming record on the computer first, and then you trigger playback/recording using the Rytm play button? So, what I’m wondering, is whether or not Rytm is successfully controlling Ableton’s transport?
You have to click the button for external clock sync in Ableton Live. It’s in the top bar on the left where tempo and tap tempo are.
For a full sync “send transport” has to be enabled in Rytm’s midi settings.
Then Ableton Live will sync to the Rytm (=you press play on the Rytm, Live will start its transport and the tempo will be set by Rytm).
If you only want to send clock and not transport, leave that part out.
But without transport sync, you could also just manually set the tempo in Live or maybe I’m missing the point why you only want clock.
Yes, that’s it!
I did not know about the ‘Ext’ Button. Probably because it only appears when you choose Sync in the Ableton settings.
Everything works fine now. Ableton adapts tempo to Rytm and I con quickly choose in the Rytm settings if I want it to transpose Ableton or not.
Thanks
Arming Ableton and launching the recording by transposing via Rytm works perfectly too.
Arming Ableton
hit Play on the Rytm to record
hit Stop to stop recording
double stop to rewind
