Suggestions for hardware that can emulate vinyls and tape machines

I’m looking for loopers, samplers etc. that can capture that fun workflow/feel of fast recording and instant sound manipulation. Extra plus if it can emulate the type of slow down speed up sound that you get when you say put a finger on a vynil or tape. Something that I’ve played with that comes close to that funness is the TE OB-4. The sampling + that spinning jog wheel just feels so fun!

Job done.

I posted in another thread about replacing an op-1 as i too love the tape machine/vinyl vibe from that and the ob-4

Apart from the red panda tensor or real tapes I think in hardware only TE stuff tends to captures that magic imo.

Although it’s not hardware I tried to capture that tape/vinyl fun in loopy pro with this template

I have one of these, it’s great: Ribbons - Kinotone

Extra bonus: it also has a reverb that is very, very nice, and the “touch modes” enable all kinds of cool effects, from tape stop to a degradation looper.

Downside: they’re out of stock at the moment and I don’t know if he’ll make more.

Well the Octatrack would certainly fit that description. The playrate is always fun to play around with, stuff gets real crunchy and lo-fi when you slow it right down. Using the crossfader gives you the ability to manipulate all 8 tracks at once and do very expressive moves and pseudo-scratching if you like. Then there’s p-locks, LFOs, plays free tracks etc that can all be used for really fun and immediate effects.

Maybe you’re not looking for something quite that complex and deep though.

Came here to suggest this! It’s difficult to get a hold of, but I like it so much better than the GLMk2.

The SP 404 MK2 could also be an option. It has an effect that simulates stopping vinyl and you can record yourself playing with the pitch.

For special FX - I love the CB Gen Loss Mk2
For ‘real’ tape sound - Neve 542

You can do some speed change stuff with the top middle knob on the Strymon Volante. It’s also pretty versatile in that you could dial in more subtle settings and use it as full mix saturation/glue/make sound betterer.

I kinda want a Landscape HC-TT (which uses a real tape) or someone’s weird Etsy thing made out of those crummy walkmans you get these days…

The pedal that really awakened the desire for this sorta device in me was the Strymon el cap. Playing with the looper + speed + tape emu gave me so much fun. One of my fav songs to do this with is the intro of eyes without a face.

I dunno if they make this version anymore. Same, diff box. Looks like there’s a V3 of the module

Sounds pretty sick

I’ve got one of these. It’s…sort of ok. But sits in the bottom of a box at the moment. It’s just not quite as great as the external design would suggest it should be. It’s basically a slightly eccentric/unique noise box rather than what it purports to be. But it does look absolutely lovely
