Suggestions for a Versatile Synth Under $800?

Not to be a hater, but I haven’t heard anything I liked out of this synth and I think it’s ugly and doesn’t look fun or efficient. That said, I’ve never touched one or seen one up close. Can you go into more detail on what’s special about it?

I have a deepmind and I really like it. You’ll be limited in Oscillator waveforms but nothing else.
It’s also much smaller than I thought it would be but that’s a plus to me.

If you don’t “like the sound of software synth”, you should probably stay clear of the DeepMind. It’s relying heavily on the digital aspects (like the effects). Not necessarily a bad thing at all in my opinion, but the DeepMind doesn’t even measure up to any of the top VSTs/AUs. A bore to program, despite all the sliders, your still glued to that screen. The problem with that screen is a horrible UI with a really badly designed section on the panel to navigate it.

Oh and the man behind the company, Uli Behringer, is a bona fide psychopath. Not uncommon for large company CEOs, but he belongs with the bad ones. A man who hides behind a company, behind his people, a man unable to stand for his actions and words, isn’t worth a whole lot. Not really talking about him cashing in on others work with the cloning.

I can agree with you in the UI issues. It’s very condensed and I disagree with many of their choices for what made it to the panel. But, can’t compete with top vsts? That’s not true at all. I’ve made monster pads and creamy leads for days. Sure, Omnisphere can trounce it in terms of complexity due to Omni having more options than any hardware synth except maybe Waldorf Quantum, but the sound coming from 24 stacked OSCs on a hardware synth is epic to me especially after using the decently sized modmatrix. And yes, the effects help alot, just like the stellar reverb on my A4 makes a huge difference.
I won’t comment on Uli as I don’t know him personally and it has nothing to do with OP’s needs.
To OP, try one for yourself if you can. The UI definitely takes time to adjust to and is it’s biggest weakness but the whole package is worth it too me. Goodluck!

I forgot one… Waldorf Pulse 2.

Still love my MS20. It’s quirky and has cool HP and LP filters

An used Nord Lead A1.

it’s super hands on and performance oriented. You have many waveforms (even stuff like bells, formant, etc.). You have different filters to select (moog, 303, etc.) It has fm, ring mod and a great effects section. Best of all. its 4 part multi timbral, so you basically get 4 synths.
