Studio Desk recommendations (US)?

Hey, I’m looking for a new workstation desk and am just wondering if anyone out there has bumped into something interesting that I haven’t. I dig the Output Platform desk, but they’re unavailable for 14-16 weeks and I need something sooner than that. Ideally I’d like something about that size and vibe that’s not $2K. Thanks!

or this

bunch of stuff of various styles/price etc sweetwater is good for browsing what’s out there and available…

i made my own simple desk/table. it didn’t take too long and wasn’t expensive. i had existing 6u racks already. used just a drill and a circular saw and orbital sander. you can have a better look if you click the link and page through the images.

Whoa that’s a truly amazing set up. Thanks - I’m starting to think maybe I should just build something too.

Much more rewarding if you can. Not to mention how expensive those desk are.

if you already have some tools or can rent them for cheap it’s not so expensive to build a basic table/desk. my wood working skills kinda suck so i kept it simple. I was more detailed with this build than previous build which had many annoying flaws… but was really just too small to eb comfortable.

the big pain in the ass was fitting all the wood in my little car and getting it home. i ended up renting the home depot van for $45 for 3 hours and did it that way.

the main tabletop piece of plywood is red oak and is $50. otherwise it’s just 2x4x8 and 4x6x6 and a bunch of screws. i already had the racks which i bought from omnirax like 10 years ago for whatever they cost back then… the whole table with all materials, van rental and racks was around $400. I already owned the tools.

This is the most fun solution.

I work from my desk as well as make music, so to avoid getting burnt out I bought a cheap standing desk base and made a desktop from some decent plywood. My monitors are clamped to the desk. It’s not the most elegant solutions, but it works and I have no complaints. It great being able to build something to your exact specifications and I love the look of plywood as well, so this is something I wanted to do. At the moment its just one flat surface but I do plan on adding some shelves or something like most studio desks have.

I did have access to a shop though, so this might be harder for you depending on what you’re working with. Altogether this was about $300 for me

I would build one. I got an old Omnirax that looks like an old Argosy design. It’s all 1" plywood with steel legs and held together with wood screws. It has 1/8-1/4 deep routes to slot in pieces.

Before I got it I thought a desk was a big crazy project, but putting this one together a few times shows me how simple it actually is.

Could probably do an entire desk with 2-3 pieces of 1" 4x8 ply and your choice of wood for the legs… The steel legs are overkill. Add some rack mount and you are good to go.

What’s a stuio :grimacing:

often it’s a corner at the end of the kitchen table, the den, the 2nd bedroom where your mother sleeps when she visits but sometimes after almost 50 years of life a basement can be dedicated to bleeps and fucken bloops.

i would just make sure you have lot’s of horizontal support under the table top. once you pile stuff on it it will flex and bend some.

the first desk i made is the one that the modular is sitting on now. it’s an ikea galant table top and i had galant legs and galant steel brace under it and it still bowed with the 2 6u racks on it. so i made a really halfassed but super solid wood frame and then it was solid as hell.

so, even w/the steel legs and steel under brace thing from ikea it will flex. so throw some 2x4s under the thing horizontally… in the pics i posted you can’t see but i added a 3rd horizontal 2 x 4 because even as it was the front was sagging a tiny bit.

It’s like an Oreo cookie but it’s made from leftover stew.

I made a desk very similar to this one.

I used a solid birch table top from Ikea “Gerton” or something like that.
The rest was from a couple sheets of Baltic birch plywood I got from a local wood supply shop. Probably cost around $300 total to build.

I didn’t make complete plans but I might have some drawings for the legs.

The biggest thing is to make sure you have enough cross supports on the back to keep the desk from racking. Mine is super solid and doesn’t wobble one bit.

Here’s the leg measurements for cutting them out of a piece of wood. This was for my own personal use so I don’t know how helpful it is. The measurements are in inches.

And here’s a 3D render of the Plan D - Wavenature hybrid knock off I almost finished designing but decided not to build. I needed a desk quicker than it would have taken me to build the 3D model version I designed. So I quickly threw together a sort of knock off of the Output desk to build instead. The leg measurements are for the Output version I did. I’ll try to upload a picture of sometime.

If I ever move again I might build this one

Thanks Tchu
Maybe I’ll make plans for it some day too so other people can build it.

I am in same boat. I did get a portable folding DJ desk that works great for now.

So old thread but thought I’d share this. I realized building something required more work time and talent than I had so I got this Glorious Sound Desk Pro from Thomann. I’m in the US and it arrived in less than a week all for less than $600. It’s MDF or something but very sturdy and I like it. The rack hardware is bs but serviceable btw.
