have a questions about some strange behavior of my el cap.
I use it as an send fx from my little mixing desk in 100% wet. But when I send to much level to the El Cap it automaticly snaps back from 100% wet to 50/50 dry/wet or something … and it gets much louder.
Another little strange thing is the stereo field. I know it does pseudo stereo. But one channel is around 5 db louder then the other and the sound is a bit panned.
I already send it to repair to Thomann. They said Strymon replaced the board of the pedal … but … you guess … probs are still there.
Does anybode have the same or similar behavior? I read a comment from another user at Thomann website who has the same issue with the dry/wet
I’ve been staring down the Capistan for a long time, but just as I was about to pull the trigger Soundtoys Echoboy went on sale for $50
Someday I’ll buy one, along with a Big Sky, so I can go truly DAW less. As it stands however I would need a pretty big chunk of change to replicate my plugins.
soundtoys echoboy is the best delay plugin for sure! also the echoboy jr let you dail in very easaly different echo flavours. Just bought the El Cap as a “Echoboy” to go for live sessions … but the behavior with dry/wet is very shit for live session when you always want to tweak the knobs on the mixing desk
ah and buy the eventide space instead of the big sky
I wonder if they will announce that their pedals support higher signal levels, give them revision numbers, or what. That’s actually why I’ve held off a bit from getting any of them, as I have a lot of modular gear that would not play well without a lot of attenuation.
If this is a concern, I’d recommend checking out Meris pedals like Polymoon, Mercury, etc. They actually have a switch on them for “Synth Level”. Nice pedals too. I was planning to grab a Polymoon soon.
so end of the day … Strymon says “we already preplaced the boards inside the pedal, it totally works as it should” and Thomann really asked me to send back the normally working pedal. This is such a shame for such an good sounding and very expensive pedal!!! And it´s a shame that Thomann doesn´t mention that on their website. Just keeping the sales high.
So do you have any suggestions for tape delay style pedals?? ofcourse which can handle line levels without problems
I don’t know if it’s just the settings (or intended) but it sounds like there’s quite a bit of clipping happening there - can’t find any info about whether it handles line level properly.
Ok so is the not accepting line level a problem for people? Since the OP was using a Machinedrum with the El Capistan, but halfway throughout the thread there is the post about not going over +4dBu or it will basically malfunction? I ordered a El Capistan and plan to use if for live gigs on Club Systems will that work or will it be „too quiet“ I am confused. Also Lady Starlight uses Strymons in her sets and has modular levels I am assuming since she has a big eurorack setup + other line level instruments.
I wish these pedals would at least have an indicator for clipping. The way H9 pedals work with a green light to show there’s a signal, and a flashing red light when close to clipping.
I got a 4ms pod to house a Magneto and it has the clipping indicator. It’s great. I didn’t like the Capistan as I felt it didn’t capture the sound of my RE-201, but the Magneto has me prepping the old Roland for Reverb.
Ok really glad to read this since mine comes today. Since a lot of techno artist use these pedals I really was shaking my head in disbelief and I am still a bit confused as to why some people percieve this clipping problem and others don‘t.
To put it in perspective: I didn’t run into much troubles with my DIG. But I’m still learning on the front of gain staging, and it just gives me a better sense of comfort/security to have actual indications of clipping (I don’t always trust my ears yet, especcially when there’s a bunch of things going on at the same time)
