Struggle with DT2 recording in ableton, only hear the FX

Sold my DT1 and want to now record my first DT2 track in ableton. Thought I setup midi channel with external instrument like on the DT1 and audio track that records from out of the instrument. For some reason it seems I hear none of the tracks but do hear only the applied FX like delay, reverb, chorus.

What am I doing wrong ?

Looking to record without overbridge as I already like the way the DT2 project sounds as it is right now.

Thanks for any hints.

Hey, in your digitakt try going into the project settings menu to check the audio settings and make sure everything is routed “to main” as well as that the USB out also shows “main”. I don’t know why your settings might be changed, but it sounds like you only have the fx track going to the main out over USB (which is an available routing option) and this would be the most likely setting to impact that.

It starts at the bottom of page 79 in the user manual and goes onto the next page (80) so pull that up and then use it to check against your current settings, aside from that I really don’t know.

thanks for getting back so soon @shigginpit - And yes, I should have mentioned that I only use the USB cable going into my Mac and that I checked the audio routing, even going back to the preset project and all audio tracks are going to main. But hearing something on ableton side means it probably is something messed up on the DT side?

let me add some pics, just so making sure I did not miss the obvious. Any other settings come to mind ?

Edit: I do manage to hear correctly if I use e.g. Audacity to record from DT2. Now I am thinking it’s overbridge still running (which I now shutdown) and the DT1 and Syntakt plugins I still see in Ableton (that I seem to not be able to remove) .

Um not sure what to tell you. While it’s unlikely, I might access the mixer pages just to confirm that the pattern volume is up to a normal level and it’s not just that somehow the fx mixer is the only page with sufficient level. Maybe ableton accidentally sent cc 95 with a value of 0? I don’t know (looks like midi is set up to receive on all channels, if it’s also set to send on all channels maybe that’s a possibility? but that’s a lot of “if’s”)

The other thing I would try is taking the fx out of the mix so that only the dry signal should be reaching the main and see if the results are the same? I honestly don’t know because it could very well be a setting on the digitakt, but it would be easier if we could completely eliminate ableton as the culprit.

In overbridge (which obviously you aren’t because it hasn’t been released for dtII yet) you’d have a separate stem for the FX but the way it is now, the behavior should be sending the full mix as it’s configured on the pages you’ve shown.

I might also pull up an entirely different project and see if the results are the same. Also, if you have not done so already, unplug the USB and power cycle the digitakt off for 30 seconds then power on and reconnect just in case there’s some kind of glitch that is not settings related. Ah and confirm you’re getting normal full mix headphone audio straight out of the DT.

I don’t know enough about ableton to help you trouble shoot that so you’re kinda on your own with that one unless some kind person stops by with some magic beans.

I had the same issue first on audacity too but unplugging and reinserting headphones did something where I was able to record correctly in audacity and then move export to Ableton for final touches. But I will keep checking. Might be something with virtual audio interfaces I configured on my Mac
