Straight and simple sampler for idm/trip-hop production

Hello everyone!
What sampler would you reccomend, if I need:
Record samples from synths and drum-machines, then just playing them looped or not by toching the pads?
I mean I’m not interested in creating sequences or beats on the sampler, cause all the musical part is gonna be made already on synths an drum machines. At the moment I have Novation Circuit Rhythm, but that doesn’t really fit for my purposes.
I thought of mpc’s (one or 1000) but seems that they are made for creating sequenced tracks to be play by touching the “play” button, but not for pads triggering with no restrictions of internal bpm settings etc.
Is that true that Roland SP404(mkII?) would be the greatest one for my needs?
PS: the music is kinda IDM-trip-hop like

I think both the MPC and the SP-404 mkII would work well for that purpose.

IDM hsd completely different needs from a sampler than trip hop IME… so hard to give a firm recommendation off the bat. Prioritize one of those and then I might be able to give a recommendation…

For example, IDM has much less need for unquantized playing than trip hop. OTOH, IDM usually likes to manipulate a samples start/end points and looping much more intensely than you need for most trip hopp beats…

Tried the Teenage Engineering KO II yet? Its a very slick and intuitive sampler, and has a good rep for its better than average sonics (fadergate doesnt apply to everyone it seems)

Not sure if only 9 samples to operate would be enough for a song

It has a lot more than 9 samples on tap. Read the manuals?

please provide an example of what you’re talking about when you say this… what artist might be your main inspiration for production?

also what is it about sequencing that makes you feel that it should not be a part of the process? I ask because there is a lot of sequencing in IDM and also Triphop, I’m trying to narrow down the core of the idea you’re trying to bring to fruition?

I meant that sequecing is about to be made already on synths, and then just recorded to a sampler as a complete sample…
Let me say that’s about massive attack, bjork, late radiohead, tricky…

Sound like you need a looper more than a sampler. How about Loopy Pro on the iPad?

You can save loops and one shots with a tap, and play them back just as easily. Also fully midi controllable—it maps automatically to the Launchpad Pro for example.

the greatest triphop/idm album of all time, which was also the first album made completely from samples. made completely on an mpc-60.
yes you can play the samples from the pads without the sequenver too even.

I used to have an MPC60. That was my favorite MPC even though it didn’t have filters.

Since OP stated this though, I believe the best sampler for just playing loops would be the SP404 MK2, which could also add cool FX:

404 MKII is a strong one, fit for many tasks. Why not

MPC60 is really great… Gonna buy when I become famous)))
But for now the budget is…hmm)
Gonna get an SP404, seems to be good one too

Yes, it’s great, but i’m not that rich at the very moment
So I think more of SP404, until I’m famous as massive attack)))

SP404MKII units can be had quite affordably second hand

One of the MPC’s would be my recommendation. You can use it for sequencing long samples of programme material (loops, synth parts etc) or make a complete track with FX, compression etc. just pick one of the newer ones according to your budget. I use a Live2 but I think the One can do a ton of stuff too. Or go for an older model but that might mean a trade off in terms of how much you can do with it. I suppose the point I’m making is that you can do more with the MPC the further along your leaning curve you get without being limited which might happen with a smaller/less well endowed unit

404mk2 +1

one of the best pieces of gear Roland has made in a while…

Pioneer Toraiz SP16, probably the most straight forward sampler out there.
