Sticky/melting buttons; like the actual texture is sticky

Yep, acetone is a disaster for plastic. I cleaned the old logitech mx master mouse with acetone and removed all the grease and sticky coating, but the mouse started to melt, the second day it ended up in the trash.

I can understand your excitement.
But your survey is not representative.
About 300 people took part. Of those, about 100 have a problem.
If we look at the total number of users on the forum (or the total number of customers), then 100 people is not even a third.
Considering the fact that there isn’t even a replacement in the store yet (and no third-party offerings either), this might indicate that the problem only affects a few upset users.
On the other hand, Elektron is happy to send spare parts on request for a small fee.

An offer with buttons made of a different material would certainly be nice.
Perhaps also buttons in other colors.

If I had this problem I might want to participate in a survey named after it.

It’s all natural.

That’s one side.

But you can’t deny that there ARE people with that problem and those are not a few.

Right?

There’s no good reason to use this material on buttons in the first place. For knobs I can understand as it’s nice to be able to adjust a parameter with minimal pressure from one finger, but for buttons it really serves no purpose.

Manufacturers should just stop using a material that has a significant probability of degrading over such a short span of time. There’s no excuse for it. Even if it wasn’t affecting me I would still take note of how many people it’s pissing off and be on their side on this.

Any survey of anything is only representative of what was surveyed. In this case, that means people that answered the Poll.

It doesnt represent the people that didnt answer the poll. If another 300 people answer the poll, what would the results be?

If the sample is 300, and 100 are positive. Thats 1 in 3.

If I manufactured something, and saw an end user poll saying 1 in 3 of my products had such a problem, Id have fixed it pronto.

This is not how statistics works. I don’t think I can invest any more energy trying to explain things to this type of thought process.

they just need to stop putting on the shit coating. a perfectly good cap lies underneath that garbage.

[I wash my hands before use, don’t smoke, keep my shit CLEAN, and they still melt over time]

Nope. I also hate sticky surfaces. …My buttons just don’t get sticky. (Since 2014 until today)
Maybe that will happen in the future. Then I’ll start grumbling too.
Or just replace the buttons with new printed ones or remove the coating or order new buttons.

I didn’t want to say it because if I do, tomorrow will be the stickiest day of my life.

along with the coating will go the black colouring. leaving you with white clear-ish buttons.

idea…why not forego the coating. they are probably cheaper to manufacture with out it  :man_shrugging:t5:

[I took the coating, as best I could, off my MPC Live, taking with it, all the labeling. expected but… :-1:t5:]

I understand that this issue impacts devices way beyond the Elektron world but I have a question. How many users with sticky buttons keep protective lids on their devices? I do and my DT mki is starting to get sticky. I’m wondering if small amounts of moisture and hand oil compound the issue if the devices are covered? Someone in the middle of the thread surmised the same thing so I’m really wondering if I should let my Elektrons breathe a bit?

what’s weird is…it degrades faster if, after using it for a while, you let it sit without using it at all. it just seems to degrade faster. constant use seems to stave it off.

That makes total sense because it happens with sneakers.

I’ve definitely been using my ST much more than the DT (which is the sticky one)
