Sticky/melting buttons; like the actual texture is sticky

Mine were free yes. They said because it was only out of warranty by a couple of weeks.

Reasonable.
I’m not paying for replacment buttons that are going to melt again.

When they start making stuff without that gunk on it, I might start buying elektron stuff again.

In what sense?
They’re small, slow and unclear.

The new screens are clear even in a dark environment, crisp and give a better visual feedback of what is happening.

So far the acrylic coat has proved really durable and hasn’t changed a bit in three months now, because the coating covers the original material, preventing further decay. I’m not saying that this is a permanent solution, but at least it has prolonged the lifetime of the button caps significantly. New button caps will also eventually degrade after a few years, unless they have started making the buttons from a different material.

I’m wondering if people leave their gear in sunlight as most of my rubberised coated gear and pads haven’t turned sticky yet, including gear that a few people have mentioned already, but a turntable that probably was too close to a window once upon a time has gone sticky on it’s heavy base?

Maybe Decksavers should look into UV protection in their plastic to potentially extend the life of gear, if that is the issue?

It is the temperature

Even if you leave the device in the box for sometime in the plastic the coating will come off

I think you’re probably right thinking about it. I bought a cheap replacement strap for my Garmin Fenix watch from ebay. Left it in a drawer for 3 or 4 years and unbelievably it melted onto a few things in there. I thought somebody had put a crayon in there as I didn’t know what the culprit was, but eventually found the melted strap, which had heavily broken down.

I contacted Elektron because of my sticky DT buttons that i have since it was released. They offered me new ones for 40 bucks.
Do you think it’s worth to get them even if they’ll get sticky again after some time?

this looks sick :triumph: makes me wish they made a dt in grey

Anyone here with a 3D printer want to make some money? I would definitely throw down for some replacement buttons.

I have the same problem and it sucks.

Might be cheaper to order new buttons from Elektron

Like everyone said…
it’s kind of pointless to order the same buttons if the same problem will eventually happen again and again.

If they’re going to be rough home-made ones, you may as well just remove the coating with isopropyl alcohol

2024 and Elektron is still making new gear with this crappy rubber coating on their buttons and knobs. They don’t care.

My bought-new-in-2018 Mk2 OT has the rubbery coating and is fine.

Several other lesser electronic devices that were stored alongside the OT have since turned to goo. It is possible that Elektron’s coating is one of the better ones but still not perfect.

@hekuli This poll is still open if you’re interested.

I sent the data to elektron 29 days ago via their ticket system. Still no response.

Interesting that approx 1/3 of people have a problem.

1 in 3 is a massive proportion.

I coated my buttons with sio2 ceramic spray, wiped on with a cloth. Will report back in 5 years lol.

if you you want to get rid of the soft paint , wich went gooey
i found a simple and effective solution

just pull off the button of the device,
put a piece of cotton cloth like an old t-shirt on you knee
and rubb the button fast and with a certain kind of pressure on that cotton

only the frictional heat will make the soft pain become very soft and loose
and it will stick to the cotton
do that on the top first and then the 4 sides
maybe wipe again with a fresh cotton cloth

this removes the ugly sticky stuff fast and completely
without chemicals or painting them
without damaging the black base coat

never use Alcohol or other solvent… it will remove the black
and you will get a white semi opaque button with no number on iz

the button looks like new but more “plastic” cheaper and less matte
but hey…better then sticky and used

8,15 and Page received this treatment …16 i ruined with alcohol… it works but took the base coat also

Will try this. And report.
Edit: confirmed! I only did button 8. You can see the difference. And feel it. No more sticky yuk.

Will do the rest.
My method, hold the button and buff the gross shit off with an old cotton tshirt.

Totally retarded that we have to do this considering Elektron machines are priced as they are. Still no response from my data collection I sent them (1/3 of elektron users have this problem)

Thank you @realrider

Did you remove the button first, or did you buff in place on the Digitone?

These results look great. I haven’t had sticky buttons, but I’m bookmarking this just in case.
