Another Bergfotron song out. Like the previous, it’s done entirely on the OG Digitone and Syntakt plus vocals.
The lyrics (in Swedish) are about how people look much better on social media than in reality.
also keeping my DNKeys. It goes so well with the QPAS…
The arpeggiator is basically copied from the OT, where it lives on the MIDI tracks and sends MIDI out. plus you can tweak the arpeggiator parameters (or the note trigs) with the 3 LFOs. One thing the DN can do with MIDI that the OT can not is having program changes on trigs, though.
If anyone is thinking about upgrading to the DNII and you have enough table space, the og OT is very affordable now and it offers a lot of the functionality you might want - sampling, effects, the comb filters, p-locks on everything, unlimited MIDI, ridiculously powerful LFOs. Also the song mode on the OT does some things other Elektron boxes cannot, like nesting sequences. I am impressed by the DN2 but as I have an OT and AR the og DN seems like it will be a much better fit and I love the focused nature of the design.
I feel stupid because my reason which I would never ever budge, after reading all these really well thought out reasons and still sound on the fence, is the chiclet buttons… Man I could never… not for the boring looking black Rolodex looking 2… the chiclet’s are freaking everything… who cares about add on’s it’s a freaking fm synth…
and I guess that they couldn’t figure out how the multimap code worked without ess.
I’m with you. The DN1 track buttons convey that there are some very colorful sounds inside if you choose to explore. The DN2 is very drab by comparison and doesn’t catch my eye. Aesthetics matter, even if we try to act like they don’t.
That’s the only explanation.
Don’t think so. That came with Digitone Keys unless I’m mistaken (shared OS). And the Digitone Keys developers are still there on the team.
It was mostly a joke, but I think that it’s as good of an explanation as any.
Certainly better than saying “too lazy to code the multimap” ![]()
If I had to guess, it would probably be better suited in updated form as a future trig mode or something. Similarly to how chord mode wasn’t directly ported at launch.
How much do you want to bet that it never happens?
Wouldn’t matter to me because I’d still be satisfied if there was never any other update. I feel all the instruments are in a good place I’m just waiting for a polyphonic sampler.
Time will tell!
I bet that is the plan of how they end up selling toneverk or whatever… stuff we used to get, now we have to upgrade for…
I bet we never get four stereo sub outputs on 1/4" again too… Until the Elektron mixer comes in ten years or something…
Moral is= embrace the chiclet’s!!! Nobody ever says “oh that dx7 mk2 was such a classic!”. Right!?!?
I never listen with my eyes.
Still, it’s black all the way for me…
I like my instruments to be a blank slate.
Cheers!
If their strategy to sell Tonverk is to get Digitone users who miss Multimap, they will sell 12 Tonverks.
On a more serious note: I get it that people are frustrated things that were there on OG are missing. But making it sound like they’re deliberately crippling devices is a bit odd, when DN2 is just such a huge upgrade in almost every aspect. The fact that they fixed things like mono sampling and grid errors on DT2 also gives me hope that things like Multimap will eventually come. I appreciate that it’s not their priority and they focus on features that are important to a huge number of users first.
It is perplexing to me that they don’t have multimap, because the code for something like that is pretty generic and reusable (unlike, say, new DSP code for a different audio machine, or the new feature to have individual velocity/duration for each note, both of which I expect require a lot of troubleshooting).
How would you use multimap on this unit? For soundlock switching, this already exists with ‘trig type’ or whatever it’s called.
I guess pattern switching via MM would be interesting.
Hmm… come to think of it, I’d also be interested in seeing the Rytm’s performance mode applied to the trig buttons.
(bit of a derail sorry)
Defining splits in the keyboard for different patches. But that can already be done with most external controllers anyhow.
I’d honestly rather priority on a custom encoder page like existed on the DNK where the encoders map to user defined destinations.
I believe that multimap allows you to trigger more than one patch per locked step on a single track. Meaning you could trigger a pad and a kick drum and a bass hit all from the same step, on the same track. This is assuming you weren’t burning up your polyphony elsewhere. It just makes the limitations of dn1 more flexible. You could probably find some other interesting uses for it if the DNII had it.
