Infinitely easier to edit on Maschine piano roll?!?
Hi everyone, used to own M+ but didn’t click at the time but I recently picked up the mk3 for finger drumming and am in paradise.
However, I kind of miss the premium vibe of the M+ which makes me wonder:
- does the M+ in controller mode work exactly as the Mk3 when using Maschine 2 software (for those who own both or did at some point)
- in standalone mode do you think the M+ could bear say 16 groups (each group = 1 beat) used specifically for finger drumming? So going from 1 group to the next etc. I’m using a fair amount of plugs on certain sounds (sampler, eq, comp, lofi, reverb)
FYI, I’m not using any synth plugs.
Let me know your thoughts, thanks for your help
Maybe not ?!?..
But some users here and there have always praised the speed of Maschine workflow…
Some hints :

Editing notes is much easier in pyramid with one single line step view.
For example you can hold a step where there is a chord and move it forward or backward.
Seems the answer is : no then…
I won’t debate for hours, this subject I personaly find maschine faster, easier, cleaner and fun ! ( And you can always use the computer if you need, bigger view )
I find pyramid, workflow convoluted, unintuitive, and painfull hence I sold it eons ago…
If you want to have an idea of how maschine editing works, see here :
For the pyramid, you’ll probably find good ressources on yt.
I’m sorry i didn’t put IMHO in my first post…
Def the same as a MK3 when plugged in to the computer!
When used in controller mode it is also powered from just the USB cable.
It’s easier on Maschine if you use a maschine jam alongside (brillant peace of gear and great integration) otherwise it’s a nightmare.
another thing to mention is that maschine handles ccs recording better than Hapax. Again, the Hapax is more powerful in this department (you can’t even see your automation on maschine standalone), but I hated how Hapax handles recording of knobs movements. You can’t overdub what you recorded. Let’s say you recorded yourself playing with the Cutoff on your synth and you want to edit that automation without erasing it, you can’t. Unless they have fixed this behaviour in last updates, I sent a feature request a couple of months before selling it.
What bothers me is that maschine could have been more powerful (and i’m not talking about cpu) than it is if only NI would listen to their customers
If you are using stock sounds you can share an example project with me and I can test it on my +
All the function are accessible except macro assignation, naming and automation editing.
It maybe could handle 16 groups with samples but only with stock internal plugins, forget raum as a reverb and try to put as much as possible at group level or even master.
i cannot test it for you as my m+ is in repair for now, only have mk3 atm.
But you have a nice proposal above my post !
He probably can save his project with samples, shouldn’t be too heavy as its finger drumming related, no 3 minutes wavefiles fortunately I suppose ?
Awesome thanks
That’s good to know, the laptop doesn’t bother me too much either. Thanks
Thanks for the offer, I think I’ll just go ahead and get it. If it works standalone with my requirements that’ll be a plus. I wasn’t a fan of the limited 2-level file management but I think I’ll bite the bullet anyway. Thanks again
@KaOsphere to your point, samples are def short and could actually be shorter if I truncated the manual chops I did. Great idea. And I def don’t use Raum reverb, all basic stock plugs. Thanks for your explanations
Thanks again for all the feedback everyone! Maschine Plus on its way, coming tomorrow before noon, can’t wait
In typical NI style they respond to questions without adressing the problems you could encounter along the way…
For example, nice to know Kontakt streams from disk ( which I’m pretty sure is not the case if you take a look at the kontakt vst on your computer ) when you have actually close to zero kontakt instruments avaliable on the + !
Connect external soundcards ? Sure but only in 44.1 when it’s written all over 96khz…
I could go for hours…
NI will always be NI…
I still love Maschine though…
M+ premium vibe? Are the pads, knobs and buttons better quality or is the aluminum case, the main difference in hardware quality compared to mk3?
Think the knobs are same material as case also!
Pads are the same, but that’s a good thing imo. They’re great.
Knobs are metal too, as the whole case
