Squarp Instruments Hapax Polychronic Performance Sequencer

Certainly. And it can’t be avoided quite often. It just makes things difficult at times without constant use. I tend to switch things up a lot which doesn’t help. Now, with the Oxi, a lot of it comes down to physical space. One thing that initially appealed to me about it was the compact size. But I think now I would really like having more screen real estate.

Anyone here using the hapax with elektron devices? I’ve had some trouble with the octatrack changing it’s pattern via program change in step with the pattern change on the hapax and sometimes it plays through one more loop before changing. I was thinking of switching to a digitakt but wasn’t sure if that would be more solid or not, never owned a digitakt. Curious if others had luck with it. Wondering how others use it in conjunction and automate your program changes. Sorry for lack of specifics, I need to boot up all my gear and dig into it again to figure out what was going on. Could be faulty memory.

But regardless of all the above, anyone using a digitakt and changing patterns via the hapax and have good luck with that?

Have you set this?

A Digitakt is not going to be any more solid. This isn’t a timing thing, it’s a groove box thing. If a box expects requesting a pattern change to “queue up” the change to actually switch at the beginning of the next bar, then requesting it right at the bar will sometimes work and sometimes wait a measure.

Best to signal the pattern change before the end of the bar like the groovebox expects.

Oh thank you! I must have missed this option. Yeah it’s been a while since I tried to do this. Going to get back into it agian.

just stopping in to say how absolutely killer the Hapax is these days. it’s really such a strong sequencer now with the years of updates, additions, tweaks, enhancements, etc. it’s a guaranteed modern classic, and idk how popular it is out in the world but it feels like it’s being slept on maybe. i know it’s been a huge part of the exploration & style of music i’ve been exploring over the last year or two, and i feel like there’s still a lot more to it i’ve only touched on.

and now it sounds even sleeker in silver

It took me a while to figure out how to make a tutorial that included midi fx, since there are so many possibilities it took me aback!

But now here is episode 7 which shows a very simple implementation of the live chord screen and euclidean modifier. This is a very basic implementation to show what can be done, and the next episode will expand on it.

Since I just got my chroma console I could not hold back so I decided to slather the master signal with it

Here is the video if you are interested, make sure to see my play list if you wanted to start from beginning!

I was super close to going for a Digitone 2 instead, but I decided to proceed with ordering the Squarp Hapax today. Elektron’s lack of retrigs and inability to use the arpeggiator on midi machines is a deal-breaker for me.

Oh yeah. Lack of PARAMETER SLIDES and buttons that will inevitably become sticky clash with my values as well.

I can say with 99% certainty that you will love your Hapax. It’s become something I can’t imagine living without.

Agreed. It’s the rug to my Lebowski, really ties the room together!

I wasnt aware about these recent feature additions

  • SONG: Sections can now contain ‘stopped’ tracks
  • PATTERN: new per-pattern setting Program Change “WHEN”. This may be used to precisely choose on what condition a PC should be sent when the pattern is launched: either always, or only if the previously sent PC is different. Please refer to the manual for further detail.

Really solid improvment, always wished it did work like this.

And i found a solution to switch presets in Abelton Live for VST, that do not support program changes (I.e. Vital) , one could run a clyph X script, and change it with a midi command, i.e. the clip with the preset changes. (Not sure if it works with PC, but CC i belive should work, if mapped by hapax, so if you put that CC into you hapax clip, it would load that clip with the instrument rack having the VST preset.

I tried it out - it works - but ofc, its noticable -if you have ringing out instruments - and instantly switch the source - it probably works better - if you make two racks - one for fx, and one for the preset, and only use time based fx after the preset.

Quick question :
How is Hapax dealing with non 4/4 time signatures ?
Does it have a “step per page” setting (see Sequencers : Please add steps per pages!), meaning for instance that you could have a pattern consisting of 4 pages of 12 steps, not using the 4 last steps ?

Thanks !

If I understand your question right, I think the answer is “you can do either”.

So let’s say we set the project signature to ¾ and our track length to “2 bars”. We will see two pages of 12 steps, with the last 4 steps of each blocked out.

But we could also leave project signature at 4/4 and change our track length to 24 steps. We still have two pages, but now the first page has all 16 steps available, and the second page blocks out the last 8.

So, generally, the project signature sets how many steps each bar contains. Then setting the track’s length determines how many/how much of those bars are present.

Does that make sense?

Thanks !
The time signature is per project, so you can’t have different time signatures at the same time in different tracks, can you ?
How is the pattern launching quantization working, is it bound to the project time signature ?
Can the project time signature change over time ?

Also, do you feel like only 8 pattern per track is limitative ?

It’s been bumped to 16 back in January with the 2.0 update.

you have per track elasticity as well

Thanks my friends…
I think I might give it a chance…
I’m extremely picky with sequencers, but it seems “decent” :grinning:

I love the Hapax…I had it originally when it came out…worked great the way it was then…with updates, even better …will get one again someday.

Again, the answer is kind of “both”. Pattern changes can be quantized by step (1 step, 4 steps, 8 steps), by bar (1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 16, or 32 bars) or just “whenever the current pattern is done”.

When quantized to bar, it looks to the project signature to determine how long a “bar” is. But quantizing to steps or length of pattern, that doesn’t matter.

That’s awesome. I’ve got big hopes !
