Hi, I would like to buy a squarp hapax and I wanted to know if anyone had one and if you know how to interact with ableton 12 and if anyone knows a tutorial for this! I would like to use it as a midi editing station without interacting directly with ableton given the excellent purchases between Maxforlive and various important vst. What do you think?
I have the Hapax. If you are looking to use Hapax to edit MIDI in Ableton Live, then it is not the device you are looking for. You can probably use program changes in Hapax to launch clips in Ableton Live. You can also assign up to 8 CCs to the 8 encoders on the Hapax. So you could control eight of your favorite paramters in Live from the Hapax. But that’s about it.
You say that you want to use the Hapax as a MIDI editing station. Are you saying you want to edit MIDI that’s in Live? Because the Hapax does not do that. If you want to have the most control over Ableton without touching a computer, you would need Push for that. And you’re going to have to interact with Ableton Live at some point if you want to use it along with Hapax, if only to find a VST or audio clips that you want to launch.
It’s possible that I’m not clearly understanding what it is you’re asking. So please give further clarification if I’m not giving you the answer you’re looking for.
thank you for your attention. exactly what i wanted to do was to use hapax using ableton instruments and its various vst. i have a push 2 but i was surprised by hapax editing to edit a track
It makes everything into a two step process.
Essentially you can easily assign tracks on the Hapax to line up with tracks on Ableton. You can plock the notes down into the Hapax and you can assign CC parameters to be controlled on the Hapax and the Hapaxs automation lanes. You of course have generative options on the Hapax (which Ableton now has similar stuff built in, but not the same) and all of this will be on the Hapax hardware itself.
The Hapax is not really a controller like Push. It can be used that way but not extremely effectively. It is a standalone sequencer, after all.
But when you’re done exploring on the Hapax you can then record what you’ve done into Abletons MIDI tracks and further edit there. You should be able to record all the automation lanes and all the notes into Ableton to be finalized and arranged and printed to audio.
But like I said: it will always be a two step process. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal but I did end up selling my Hapax due to this, and switched to a Push 3 standalone instead. I wouldn’t mind going back to a Hapax at some point but it’s a joy to use and a beast of a hardware platform, but Push 3 obviously integrates much better with Ableton. That said, Hapax is a much better editor of midi notes and automation from a piece of hardware.
that’s exactly what i wanted to read. of course i know it’s a midi controller and that’s why i wanted to use it. using hapax using ableton instruments via midi. then the eventual song comes by itself.
I believe that the Hapax would be just as versatile for sequencing soft synths as it is at sequencing hardware devices. You might find the automation editing to be a bit more streamlined from directly within the DAW, however the additional features and playability offered by the Hapax would compliment nicely.
There is no saying that you have to use entirely one or the other approach for any task.
that’s exactly what i meant to do. use hapax to play the various instruments in ableton 12 and prepare the editing. once the song is prepared i would go and record the song.
The only issue I can see is trying to synch the clocks from hardware to Ableton. I gave up trying hybrid anything due to this and mostly just use hardware now. But all you have to do is set up receive midi channel, on Ableton and send midi channel on hapax.
I’ve been experimenting with using the hapax to sequence VSTs in Ableton, and it works fine, provided you like the hapax workflow (I do). But at least with my mac there is a pretty dramatic amount of latency, so I have to use the midi compensation feature in Hapax to correct for this. Works, but kind of irritating to set up on every track. So I end up just sequencing my hardware and recording into Ableton instead.
I appreciate your response (I follow you with pleasure on the YouTube channel) and it’s what I imagined since I sold some hardware and wanted to make the most of it also with the software via midi!
thanks for your attention and since I have an M1 that I use little but as soon as I conclude the purchase I will know how to interact I hope for the best. and I think that this editor for the work is (maybe) definitely interesting especially for the track editing solutions. p.s. do the hapax effects make the vst in use work well?
It’s the same as with hardware synths; find the cc for cutoff, res etc map them and you control them from the hapax. A lot of expressive possibilities when using automation per sequence, making subtle or extreme changes on the next sequence etc. I find the hapax to be the most straightforward of the sequencers I’ve tried when it comes to this kind of stuff.
I’m happy to read it and I think that in addition to the sequencer it has an impact for an elaborate but simple editing!
