Elektron details all over the place, and I thought it’s just the control sheme but imagine this grown out in 1-2 years, they could easily create a rytm/ A4 pendant in an instance, that’s what makes the lm drum release interesting. it’s cringe and idk why but somehow next level copying codebase or Elektron espionage/ reverse engineering

I’ve wondered about this for a while. If Behringer was going to make a clone of any Elektron products, I think MD / MM would be the most interesting given the scarcity and age of those devices now. But I think it’s also pretty far fetched to imagine B making a faithful clone of either of those. Not sure why I have the feeling they won’t ever clone any Elektron hardware.
I don’t own any Behringer stuff currently but I’d order a Behringer Machinedrum on day 1 ![]()
I see them as a good hardware manufacturer but not as a good software engineering company.
And MD/MM are a really complex software beast.
I’m sure they are able to clone it, but recreating the software by themself I guess it’s too much work.
And quite happy for Elektron that something will block Behringer on that part.
Despite I would like to see a new MD/MM.
justin already reverse engineered the entire software, so its already been done.
I think it’s likely that Behringer makes an Elektron style groovebox at some point, based on what we’re seeing from them with multi timbral digital synths and sampling drum machines. As far as the sound engines, I think they would come from the mutable engines and perhaps a few derived from their own digital Wavetable synths at this point.
I don’t see Behringer or anyone making a faithful 1-1 recreation of the workflow and its problems or the engines and their divisive idiosyncrasies. But freely assignable lfos, slides, p locks… etc… you can count on. Might just end up making Elektrons recent efforts look even better though, if they fall short.
They may even make an Octatrack 3
That was likely done by editing the assembly of the existing firmware. Behringer can’t just copy Elektron’s firmware and sell it as their own product.
You know, cracker people reverse engineer part of the firmware/software to make it passe the key validation. And that require really good understanding of computer science in this specific scenario for this specific target.
And that does not mean full understanding of the firmware/software in detail.
And I really don’t try to reduce Justin understanding of the firmware by saying that ! By any mean !
And it does not mean also legal usage of the firmware.
Bachinedrum sounds interesting, but Bonomachine sounds like it’s too close to the Edge.
No one said “just use the firmware as is”
I’m just saying, they’ve figured out all these vintage machines workflows, and someone has done the MD.
It’s not a stretch
Has this been posted publicly or just ‘insider knowledge’
I haven’t seen anything
The closest thing to elektron they’ve done is the display layout and graphics on linndrum… but that’s just an interface for standard sample playback / sequence features.
I’ve seen that 3rd party firmware release for machine drum but I didn’t think it’s anything to do with behringer.
AN Octatrack fir £300 hmmm tasty.
It’s just speculation that’s been stoked up since the LM drum dropped. Nothing to see here
