None of my many friends currently residing in Hell have texted me to say that it’s blizzard conditions down there, but somehow nonetheless Soul Coughing have reunited!!!
I am tentatively excited… we’ll see if their reunion or the Gallaghers’s blows up first. Here they are on Kimmel doing Super Bon Bon:
Kind of shocking since M. Doughty basically called Soul Coughing fans a bunch of idiots with horrible taste back when Marc Maron interviewed him about 12 years ago.
thanx for refreshing my sonic memory…completely forgot about this weird genious, half accoustic jam meets sampling electro accoustic noise production, which was quite upfront unique and fresh like nothing else for a while in my life and in that chapter of music/pop culture…
I am glad that they play again together, but I doubt they will tour Europe as well. So it keeps me calm somehow at the same time. Unless they announce new record, which I doubt as well. But I like them and we were revisiting their records with my bandmates quite recently. I also only recently realized that Sebastian Steinberg also plays on some of my other favourite records (for example with Fiona Apple, Cibo Matto, Weyes Blood…) Also solo record by Mark De Gli Antoni called Horse Tricks (1999) is pretty dope…
he was a bit of a cunt tbh - when i was at uni in manchester thirty years ago i went to their gig at the union and went backstage after and smoked a bunch of weed with the bassist i think, then he invited me to the london gig so i went and when i got their and spoke to the doorman they wouldn’t let me in?? so i blagged my way in and went backstage again and basically doughty told me fuck off!!! anyway thats my story and i’m sticking to it
I always loved her records. And she is still evolving - first three albums were 9-10 out of 10 for me for years. But if so, then The Idler Wheel Is Wiser… is 11/10 (Steinberg plays there as well) and Fetch the Bolt Cutters is 12/10. Phenomenal, indeed.
While I know “Ruby Vroom” and “El Oso", I had totally forgotten “Irresistible Bliss”… So thank you for letting this pop up in my radar, after 28 years ^^
