Sonicware Liven Lofi 12

How are you getting on with it? Mine just arrived but no power supply or batteries around, so have to run out to the shops.

Great, it takes a short while to get used to it, you will probably need to do the update as mine shipped with an older version. You can use a Volca power supply if you have one of those around.

Workflow is quite ok once you get some of your own samples on it, the 4 tracks go quite a long way thanks to the polyphony, so chords or drum parts are possible on single tracks, I think it sounds really nice, with the exception of the tape fx which just layers mains hum and white noise over the mix :joy: Why no YouTubers mentioned this is a mystery, it’s crap. But really no other complaints for the price, stick with it for a few days until you get used to the workflow/operation and it is worth the effort I think.

Is the resampling useable?

I guess that’s subjective as it’s a lofi machine, but if I resample a custom break that’s been made across 4 channels, how does it sound? Obviously it’s crunchy in the first place… So just wondering.

I keep face palming a bit too when I search YouTube for the latest video’s. A lot of cheesy music that makes it sound like a toy, when I’d expect loads of crusty boombap sickness. Maybe it’s just because not that many people have picked it up yet

Not sure if you can resample if using all 4 tracks as I think you need a track (and empty sample) free to do it, I tried resampling and it was crusty as all heck, noticeably more so than the pattern, even at 24k sample rate, also the level is much lower and I couldn’t figure out how to adjust it, manual did not even mention resampling. TBH I doubt I’d bother resampling on this basis, better to record externally then resample that IMHO.

Cheers

Meh. Not going to be arsed to do that generally I think, so probably a no go device.

TBH I think for Boombap it isn’t that suitable, you have limited sampling time and slots and sample management is by sysex. It is more like a drum machine/synth than say an SP404 or MPC, that said it is good but somewhat a walled garden, actually a little like a SP12/1200.

Would you say it’s harder to make a boom bap beat on it than a PO-33? It seemed like a slightly fancier but immediate version of that, but maybe I’m in ā€˜grass is greener’ territory

Probably a bit easier but I’m not a Boombap guy, though I do have a PO-33. I guess if you can try one with a return policy that would be the way to go. The chopping is just dividing the sample into equal sections currently there is no manual chop points. I asked them to implement the OP-1 style chopping and they seemed to think it was a good idea, but who knows if they will add it.

Hey guys, I’m struggling to update the firmware to v 2.0. I’m on a Mac using Sysex librarian, followed all the instructions and lowered the transmit speed even to a ridiculously low level and still can’t get past the UPDT status on the Lo Fi 12. I checked MIDI cable I’m using and it works well for everything else. I’m using Digitakt as the MIDI USB source, is there a mode I have to put the DIgitakt in to make this work? Thanks for any tips.

Yes the update is not fun, buy it with the os2 installed

If I had a Time Machine then I would

The digitakt can’t send sysex files to external gear. And be careful to do so, because it can break the machine. You’ll need an audio interface with midi to get it working. Hope, that helps — good luck!

Yikes, thank you.

Yeah :+1: or a midi cable to USB, that’s what I’ve done

The mad lads at Sonicware now have a 6khz sampler. The Lofi 6. Only 500 available.

this is vaguely irresistible. last thing I need but… what is this sudden pain in my wallet…

I don’t think I can justify paying $300 for this… maybe. probably. hopefully this gas pain will soon subside.

This looks sick, to bad you have to pay 80 extra euros to get it in Europe

It made me dig out my Yamaha SU10 to see what it’s lowest sample rate was, however the lowest it goes is 11.64 khz.

Shame it wasn’t made easily available to those in the UK, can’t be bothered getting ripped off with all the import tax lark
