I’ve been experimenting lately with probability, mainly due to not having time to program beats properly. I’ve come to a similar conclusion to you. I was going for something fidgety and unsettling, but at the expense of a cohesive groove.
I’ve come to the conclusion that random percussion needs a melodic element, otherwise it just sounds like popcorn in a microwave.
