Back to radio…
Looks like a cool source for sampling random stuff. And the device looks gorgeous, too.

Omfg, I see drenching this in reverb alongside some classical records running through an octatrack template with some ambient drum lines and playing a set in a haunted ballroom celebrating the 50th anniversaries of a room filled with ghosts.

I need it.

I don’t know why, but I love the sounds in the demo. I’ve never used noise or any sounds like this before.

Damn this one is cool!

From website: The net price (without VAT, shipping, customs, money transfer expenses): 560 Euros .

After listening to the demo and reading the manual, it looks quite interesting. The wood case is lovely. If it was about €150 cheaper, I’d really consider a purchase, but the price is just a little too much for me. If they released a DIY version as they did in the past for Lyra, it’d almost certainly be an instant buy for me.

Just read the manual:

The line output is isolated from high frequencies in MESSEIVER’s chain . It’s to prevent external connections from interfering with the reception, as all MESSEIVER’s circuits participate in it, including the grounding . But still some external connections can influence the sound and reception . That’s why we recommend microphone recording from the internal speaker .

This is quite disappointing.

So… a broken radio?

I was literally looking this week at a pocket fm radio with headphones output to record some noise into the rytm, the idea of capturing “aether” (or whatever he calls it) of radio sounds amazing but not 560 euro amazing I suppose, I guess it depends what’s your vision with it, if it’s going to be the center sound of whatever you’re doing then yeah it could be worth it, but in my case I just want some noise layers I can pitch down and filter. and recording from the speaker bit seems bit overcomplicating, could be cool if you have some cool mics but otherwise just adding ambient noise…

so this $15 philips will do

Koma’s Field Kit has a CV-controlled radio, plus mixer and a bunch of other stuff. Great for grabbing samples.

That would look lovely sitting on my desk and would enjoy sampling from it

Outside of my budget though for what it is

now that looks like a great noise box! and for a very reasonable price considering what’s packed inside

I use mine with contact mics too, but mostly for the radio. The Push 3’s CV out can even sequence the tuning which is pretty wild.

I think this completes Soma’s long journey from being a quirky but interesting musical instrument company to being a retailer of expensive objets d’art with a quasi musical theme. The Lyra and Pulsar are legit instruments. The Cosmos is a marvellous effects box. But this new thing, however clever, sits alongside the Terra and Enna as being primarily a rather pretty display piece for the home.

… very professional presentation …

just throwing it here, I’ve found a very cool website that basically does the same thing from the browser, with instant sampling from the web, not trying to overthrow the topic but just fyi there’s a very cool web version of very similar function…

I’ll see you 50 years after I die.

OP-1 Field has a pretty amazing and unique feature.

I think most know about the fm radio on board but using the radio as a source for the vocoder is fucking magical.

I discovered it on accident one time and I was like “why the hell is my vocoder playing without me.”

The vocoder settings let you go into a sort of atonal noise wash, which is really nice for getting a unique shaker like sound, driven from some random song or talk radio blurb.

The Soma thing isn’t for me, but it’s cool to see more units like this.

I can agree with the other poster that they are bordering on cool looking decorative objects that are vaguely musical, but it seems within their ethos. I see them continuing down both paths.

Of all brands to not need to put into a box, I’m cool with Soma doin whatever the fuck.

This has inspired me to put a CV controlled radio, shifting tuning in tempo, through a spectral shifter. Rad.
