It’s a known issue. Same thing happened with my M4 MBP. I spoke with SSL support, they recommended turning the Big Six off when not in use.
Did anyone manage to calibrate the BiG SiX audio interface with Room EQ Wizard? I can’t find any setup for the basic calibration routine that gives me sufficient level at the input.
I ordered on from Thomann yesterday, got a free decksaver and price seemed pretty good even though it’s really an expensive device for me. But looking forward to it. I have been using a Tascam Model 12 and a Samson SM10 and was always struggling with routing stuff. Sold the Tascam and might sell the SM10 once I understand how to route stuff to the B6.
Now to my question. How are you setting it up with patchbay(s)? I have two Samson s-patch plus patchbays and not sure wich route to go. Connect everything to one of the patchbays or try to do channel 1-12 on the first PB and then do the cue and ext etc in the second one. All advice is much appreciated so I can get it right from the start I really want to have everything patched so I don’t need to touch the B6 once installed.
I have mostly stereo synth/groove boxes but a couple of mono synths but plan to do individual outs from my Rytm and A4 eventually and a coupen if outboard effects pedals.
Thanks
I tried to make a template in excel mapping out all the ins/outs from the Big SiX. If anyone wants it let me know. Its pretty basic but still could be useful
Top is my 2 patchbays and the bottom are supposed to represent the Big SiX with the back and front panels.
I did a similar thing.
Running the risk of stating the obvious - what I really like about using the patchbays in this configuration, is that the outputs are (mostly) normalled to the input below. That way I have a fully functional setup without anything patched in, but I can break the normalisation and reroute at any point I want. Say if I want to temporarily use the Bus Comp on the mono channel inserts for example.
I’ve worked with this setup for a couple of years now and it fits my workflow perfectly.
Edit: updated picture
This looks great! Every recommendation like this is very valuable for me :smiley
Thank you!
Nice one! Looks really clean and well thought out
Now i think im done planning the routings. I might change my Aanalog Heat + FX to the Bus B depending on how well it will work as an end of chain. But i think this is as good as i can get it. Thank you for the inspo @hazza26 and @videomusik
I think im ready to get rid of the Samson S10 now as well.
Edit: Looks like the B6 will arrive tomorrow so im feeling pretty excited
Loving how everyone manages their patchbay connections, I thought I was the bat shit scientist.
Anyway, here’s mine.
PB 1: inserts/mastering
PB 2: effects/SR
PB 3: drums/valve mix
PB 4: synths/big 6
Dang 4 patchbays is pretty cool! I’m thinking about getting a third one to be able to patch in inserts from my Digi-boxes but will see how much i really need that
What DAW are you guys using with your B6? I’m deciding wich one to go with for recoding stems to my computer and trying to arrange songs or do whatever it may take me. I have a Ableton 11 lite that I have never really used but thinking it’s pretty cheap to upgrade to the next tier. But since I have a very nice MacBook Pro M3 I might just go for Logic but have read that it needs bit of a workspace to work properly with the B6.
So any advice or inspiration from you guys are most welcome
I have an “old” Intel MacBook Pro, and I’ve been using the B6 with Logic without any issue. It’s been pretty reliable.
But in my setup Logic is just a multitrack recorder and “multi-take linear editor”, I haven’t used any VST/Audio Units/instrument/FX. Also, I haven’t recorded more than 4 monos at a time from the B6. I did play all the “main” tracks (12 chans) to the B6 simultaneously while recording the master stereo.
There is this annoying configuration/routing to get through in Logic, because Logic absolutely wants the master out of its virtual mixer to be USB 1/2 of the B6. What I do is that I mute the master in Logic, create a “Monitor” bus that outputs to USB 15/16 (ext 2), and route tracks there as needed to check a recording or send a click or whatnot.
Thank you! This is what I had read about needing to route the out to 15/16.
Right now I’m using ext 1 & 2 as effect returns. Will the Logic routing to 15/16 make it impossible to use the ext 2 as effect return of my hardware effect or how can I record both effect return to logic in this case?
So, I never used exts as FX returns, but from what I know of the B6, the exts are either getting the audio from the USB interface or from the TRS input depending on a pair of switches - it’s not mixing both sources.
When recording your FX returns I would just flip the EXT 1 FROM USB 13/14 (or the other one for EXT 2) so that whatever Logic sends out it doesn’t override the signal from your FX return. So you wouldn’t be able to use the made up “Monitor” bus of Logic in that case. If you need to monitor something from Logic that’s separate from your FX send/return audio while recording the FX returns then you will need a “normal” track available for that purpose (ie USB 1-12)
Thank you, makes a lot sense.
EXT 1 FROM USB 13/14 and its sibling switch don’t have LED indicators though, so it’s easy to forget which position they’re in
But it will all make sense when you hit play and listen to what’s on the given EXT track (especially since the FX return will probably be different than whatever you send from Logic).
Would you mind to post a picture how the mixer looks like in Logic when this is set up? I’m trying to figure out what to do here and feel a bit stuck. I have most of this working with multitracking so I can record and I have set the speakers on my Mac to be channel 15/16 so most seem to work but I’m not able to set the last bit with muted master and a new master.
