Solid State Logic six compact mixer

So this test is also with a Prophet 12 patch, but this time I deliberately designed the patch for the purpose of applying the second layer throug the EQ and compression of the SSL SiX, since it’s in the lower end and as such, I wanted more presence from it.

First sixteen bars is from the SSL SiX recording, the second sixteen bars are the exact same patch with the exact same sequence, but the SSL SiX now turned off.

Agreed, but why draw the line there? You dont need lots of gear regardless if your making music for yourself or for other people

Maybe not, but I hate the look on a client’s face when I tell them “welp, looks like we have to use a virtual instrument for that part”

Look, we all know that you can make music even with your phone. So what are you trying to say here?

I really miss the insert options of the Six, it’s nearly impossible to find a small mixer with master inserts. I just couldn’t get over the lack of stereo channel inserts as well as the fixed ratio compressors. Anytime I compressed a mono bass line or kick on channel 1/2 there was a bad oscillation spike. Pretty much made the mono channels useless for me.

It did sound really good in a non-colored way. I’d be willing to pay well for a Twelve with adjustable G bus and more control options on the stereo channels.

The comps are really useful but should only be used mild subtle caressing the audio. Shouldn’t expect too much from them & use a regular comp in conjunction with the six’s built in comps. Or buy a g-comp for £4000 :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Interesting . The second 16 sounded nicer to my ears . Lovely tone and feel to that tho btw

Very interesting , the six 16 sounded better in this one

Thanks for posting as looking at a six myself

Master inserts are inserts on the main output? The Soundcraft EPMs have inserts on the main out.

The SIX has master inserts - look at the connection schematics (OUT/SEND DB25 1&2 insert sends, IN/RETURN DB25 1&2 return inserts)

Yes, exactly. I actually opted to return to my 16 channel Soundcraft after selling the six. I’m not crazy about how compact the knobs are or the fader feel on Harman era Soundcrafts, but it’s features surpassed the six for my needs.I also paid $1250 less for my fx16ii.

This was a big WTF moment when I plugged my bass guitar directly in to ch1. Then the same on Ch2! I called the product specialist and he said that they were pretty much optimised for vocals. I have no issues with this as this is the best sounding home mixer I’ve ever heard a Bass guitar go directly into. I only use a DI box when splitting (& phase flipping my OD pedal) for parallel comp, but using a proper bass comp into Ch2.

By the way. I got some pretty interesting compression putting the AR thru the talkback mic comp.

Must try the talkback comp. is it any good?

It’s Very obvious, not polite at all.
Made some interesting drum samples with the AR.
And since it goes to the foldback outs, you have to plug it back into one of the other channels, if you want to sum into the master.

I know, that’s what I’m saying, the master inserts on a mixer that small is ideal and hard to come by. Was my favorite part of the six hence my statement:
“I really miss the insert options of the Six, it’s nearly impossible to find a small mixer with master inserts. I just couldn’t get over the lack of stereo channel inserts as well as the fixed ratio compressors.”

What I meant by “I miss the insert options” is that I no longer own the six and that feature is missed.

sorry for saying this but you’ve kind of ruined it imo
what speakers/headphones do you use?

Why sorry? You been naughty? :blush:A set of AKGs, don’t recall their exact name. Yeah, I might’ve overdone it this time. Won’t be doing more of these now, I’m back to making tracks.

EDIT: Now I remember. It’s a pair of K712. Had them since 2015, I believe.

So it doesn’t make much sense to me why you who dont own a six, and don’t seem to be considering one, has so much to say about it…as well as stylistic mixes that come from it. If you were highly informed from experience, that would be helpful. But really your comments just detract from the conversation for me.

Let us know when you try the six.

I kinda wish I could borrow an SSL six to A/B the comp against my SA4000 mk I

Are there any attack/release controls on the SiX compressor? HPF sidechain? wet/dry?

Can the inputs handle +24dBU levels without struggling?

If anyone’s around, you’re welcome to my place to try it out. Bring whatever gear you wanna test it with and I’ll put on some coffee.

I live in Sweden, Gothenburg, pretty damn close to Elektron HQ, so there’s that, too

I’d like to take you up on that offer! Unfortunately its a bit of a long walk from Helsinki to Gothenburg :nyan:
