Just a question. Have those screws to open the instrument been hard to remove? On my device I had the impression of breaking my tool before they got loose.
Maybe somebody took “built like a tank” too litteraly?
I don’t know but I think retaillers preorder too as Elta Music seems to don’t have yet its own assembly factory and is limited to small batch at once (like a hundred unit).
The overall interest for this instrument is growing so Maybe it will be wise to preorder now for the next may/june batch
Makes sense! I’ve added a notification at Juno so if they get one I’ll grab it there asap. I’m in the UK so I’d be hit with all sorts of tax/import madness otherwise.
in order to update the firmware you have to remove ten (10) M2 hex screws - this is not great for many people as most don’t have the right tool
I do have the right tool, but that didn’t stop me from stripping two (2) of the screws
and since rock > paper > scissors > Dremel I’ll have to replace two of the screws
the firmware update itself is super easy and super fast (a few seconds)
so…
if your Solar 42 has a serial number between 001 and 206 and you intend to update the firmware (you should) then please make sure you use the right tool (#2 hex screwdriver).
General Question: is there a better (official) place to provide feedback about the Solar 42?
AFAIK Elta has no “official” forum or community, which they host on their web site. But if you have questions or need to talk to them, drop an email. They are responsive.
my serial number is 186, needs firmware update but haven’t had any issues with the touch plate performance, maybe i’m just not that experienced with the touch plates yet but hasn’t bugged me at all to motivate me to take the panel off
some very brief thoughts:
holy crap, with a few patch cables this thing becomes a techno monster
the oscillators aren’t that hard to tune if you have experience with unquantized sources. i have had sequences running for 30+ minutes and listened carefully for drift, it was extremely minimal and sort of sounded more like a drifting phase modulation over time that would latch back into place
the whole mixing area in the middle is actually freaking powerful for sound sculpting. within a few minutes i was thinking about setting up speakers in quadrophonic layout using the extra outputs to have sounds swirl around even more heh
panning and blending the level of sounds really changes the overall feel of patches. the light sensing globes are a treat to play, if you have decent lighting in your studio they basically perform like a more gentle roland d-beam
at the end of a few hours my thoughts were: this should cost a lot more, a lot of people are going to fall in love with this thing as they get exposed to some of the deep capabilities it has
my unit so far from a QA standpoint has been flawless. Paintjob and knob feel is phenomenal- i’m very very picky and granted each unit can vary and be impacted by shipping/temps etc but so far it stands up with the quality of higher end eurorack modules with ease
my only regret: not ordering one months ago at the introductory price in yellow or army green hah
Looks insane. Don’t have any good speakers near by to hear it properly but it looks legit.
When it’s both of those things in looks alone, it can tend to go a long way. Been developing some video channel content and really am glad to have a set of gear that covers every base. At least in my mind’s eye of sound design, and live music production/improvisation.
Kind of noticing how to change gears in life, and get out of negative cycles. So I’m just working in a circle to get to the things I need to discipline myself with, and then re-approach my creative endeavors. Not entirely got it tight enough but I’m circling around targets more than not.
