Software type Octatrack?

I sold my OT but the only thing I regret is the audio mangling ability which I’m going to miss.

Is there a software equivalent on PC to sort of do this?.

Ableton Live + Max + Push Controller is the closer you can get

Which is pretty far …

I don’t have a push controller, going to invest in an ipad and Touchable 2.

What kind of max devices are we talking about, this is my first steps into Ableton.

…you may want to think about getting yourself an OT…again :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:  (not funny isn’t it…)

It was my 2nd OT, I doubt I get one again ever.

Workflow isn’t my cup of tea at all.

mmm…surely there’s something out there for max but personally, i would rather go the ‘hardware way’
have you looked at reaktor stuff? (not sure if someone has done anything similar already). i wouldn’t mind giving it a try (in case it’s of any interest to others as well)

Ableton + Push is great but for “audio mangling”? Not quite for me.

Ableton + Push + Alchemy (or one of a handful of other capable vst’s)? Now we’re getting closer.

Check out Gearslutz. Someone over there on a very similar thread (I suspect the same OP?) linked to what looked like some great software to be used within Live that will further deliver some audio mangling.

You could also always try things like The Mouth or The Finger as FX within Live to get going in terms of live, on the fly mangling.

would a kaoss pad be any good for what you’re looking for?

Just by curiosity, name one thing non related to hardware, that is possible to achieve on the OT and is not possible to achieve with Ableton Live + Max + Push.

Please note that I’m not talking about if it is easy or not, I’m talking about if it is possible or not.

Sorry, I do not think so. Sure, there is some tracker-software, a lot of sequencer-stuff and much more. Software is just very, very, very big with what it offers.
But you loose the interface of the OT and the handling of the samples.
If you combine some software with dedicated controllers you may be able to build your own “perfect” machine. Maybe you can come close to something mimicking the OT. But why would you do this? In my view it doesn’t make sense then to “copy” the OT.

FLstudio 11 + a Matrix Controller can do some nice things too these days:

I guess the hard part with Software is to mimic the Octatracks ability to blend over scenes.

i’m currently working on a http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e--MH6q7Fo4) but again, you’ll end up in MIDI territory…no direct access to the audio…

Thanks for the replies, food for though.

Keeping the OT was just a luxury, I create music for fun but again I just couldn’t get on with the workflow a second time.

I have to look at Reaktor, but the music I create or inspire by is LA Beat Scene if that helps in defining what I need besides samples.

I just want to say that you can use all the midi controllers and all the ‘infinite’ software possibilities but you can not get the immediacy of hardware machines.

Yes, and this is huge…with software you’re always going to be fighting latencies, delays, hiccups, etc. The OT is tight. However, yes, Live + Max + other VST/FX modules will give you an infinite set of mangling possibilities.

some nice features are on TwistedTools series…included S-Layer

kinda of junk kaoss pad

I always knew this, but I couldn’t afford to keep the OT. I be happy to have a software type experience if needed. I love mangling on the OT but surely software is more advanced these days?.
