Small MIDI controller keyboards

Hi!

Looking for a small MIDI controller keyboard. The dream would be:

Small enough to go well with the iPad Mini
Midi channel changeable from the controller
Bluetooth.

So far, I only found:
Qunexus (no bluetooth)
Sensel Morph (expensive, dunno about channel changing)
Akai LPK25 Air (a bit clunky, only 4 channels accessible from the controller)

What do people use? Any tips? Halp?

It’s not bluetooth, but I use one of these plugged in via CCK. Works great and fully configurable (latching, momentary, cc or note, range etc). Real cheap too.

You could also use this for more complicated setups (conditional remapping, scaling etc):

Thanks! This reminds me – I’m mostly after a keyboard. Didn’t think to mention, duh. But the nano line is pretty interesting, and the Midiflow is a great tip, in fact!

X key air 25 or 37 ? Light, slim, poly aftertouch, Bluetooth, change midi channel by pressing pitch bend up and down simultaneously and then pressing a key…

Works like a breeze on mac, pc and ipad !

Any other criteria to meet ?

WhenI was thinking about getting a smallish keyboard to go with my Ipad, I was looking at the CME XKey Air: https://www.cme-pro.com/xkey-air/, it has bluetooth plus poly aftertouch, too. Not cheap though, and I don’t know if you can change channel on the keyboard itself.

(edit: ah @KaOsphere beat me to it! and good to hear that you can change channel on the unit).

I didn’ need the bluetooth so I went the classic 37 which is slightly cheaper !

This unit as been a really good investment when working on my desk as opposite to my old komplete s61. I grab the keyboard plug the usb, record instaneously in bitwig, unplug, put away…Practical, efficient no hassle ! I love that !

The midi channel change feature was undocumented when I bought it ( dunno if this has changed ) but I found a facebook post on their page explaining the process.

So if the Sensel Morph is too expensive the Roli Block Keyboard is out too right?

I guess this doesn’t matter because it’s too expensive but …
The Sensel Morph allows you to set up your own custom interface with each overlay and select the midi channel individually for each control element.

So for instance with the music production overlay
image
the pads can go out one midi channel, the dials another and the keypads a third.

The two little white buttons in upper left are for next and previous program.

Battery and Bluetooth makes it nice with the iPad. It does MPE too.

@KaOsphere – That’s a great suggestion, thanks! It looks really good – I actually have the Xkey 37, but didn’t think that the 25 air is actually pretty nice for this purpose!

@Jukka – not strictly too expensive, I’m pretty curious about the Sensel. Would you happen to know if there’s any facility for changing MIDI channels from the controller itself? Probably not, but…

NanoKey studio fits the bill as long as you aren’t picky about key feeling (i don’t like the clacky slabs but i don’t hate them either) and are ok with only changing 8 midi channels from the keyboard (each of the 8 pads can be used to select a preset which switches midi channel).

I’ve used the NanoKey Studio, and you get what you pay for. I didn’t like it very much — but it did the job well because it was light and portable, and cheap enough that I really didn’t fret about setting up in a coffee shop with it or things like that.

I’ve recently switched to a Sensei Morph, but haven’t had time to really explore it. To force myself to use it, though, I gave my son the NanoKey Studio, and he likes it, which is a good sign for him.

Anything out there in the same size as the Akai LPK25 MK2 that includes a MIDI port?

Arturia Minilab mk3. A little bigger but still.

That’s double in size. Not quite same size lol.

Yeah lol dude, the width is bigger otherwise it’s the same. So lol my dude. Yeah.

Keystep might be closest but again, bigger I believe.

Indeed the Keystep 25 is also bigger.
Seems like LPK25 MK2 is the smallest. (I don’t have more space) I was hoping to find one that includes a MIDI out port so I wouldn’t need a USB>MIDI convertor.

OMX-27 is good if you like that sort of thing. Not bluetooth though

I really want keys and mini keys is already a massive compromise but better than no keys.
Guess I’ll have to buy a USB>MIDI convertor if the LPK25 is my only option.

Never seen the OMX-27. A bit expensive although with the convertor I’m probably paying the same. :frowning:
