SL MkIII keyboard controller from Novation

i only got mine yesterday so definitely dont know everything about it yet,
but i got it for the keyboard, scale modes, light guide, zones and quick access to mutes and solos…
having the screens is great so you are not guessing what each control does also…

I didn’t really need the sequencer as i have Elektron gear and they have better sequencers imo
so I see it as a bonus, the arp is like Elektron arps but without pitch offsets…
its really good so far and doesnt feel like a waste!

I want it because it has the nice keybed. Only other decent keybed for a 49 is the NI which is also a waste (and also giving Monday to NI, ew)

does anyone know how to set up aftertouch to work with the digitone?
i press hard on the key and it doesnt detect it at all…
do i have to set a specific cc to make this work ?
I have never really used aftertouch and have no idea how to make this work TBH

Do you have something assigned to aftertouch in the digitone? I think you have to assign something first in the sound menu.

yes something is assigned,
but the little meter to show amount doesnt move when i press hard on the keys

On older Novation controllers you can turn it off and on. If it’s not switched off, I’m not sure what it could be.

Ive just got it to work it has to be set up in the novation components software…
i just thought it would work by default but obviously doesnt…
Thanks anyhow!

What? That’s a shame! Something like this has to be independent from a computer.

Im still finding my way with the keyboard so might be possible not sure…
but it does rely heavily on setting everything up first in components,
which is easy enough to use and im always connected by usb anyway

the digitone comes to life with the modulation wheel and aftertouch using the digitone keys presets!

I found this.

This is with Firmware 1.2

Assignable Aftertouch

Giving your SL MkIII performances an expressive boost, Aftertouch has been made assignable to any MIDI CC you like within Components. Now you can use key pressure to control anything in your DAW or synth capable of receiving MIDI, from opening a filter or modulating oscillator pulse width, to increasing the depth of a distortion effect or detuning a unison stack.

Ah ok, that must be why it isn’t set by default

I found this in the Zones Chapter (10) :

H. Enable/Disable Channel Pressure for a Zone

On page 2 of Zones View, the sixth knob selects whether keyboard channel aftertouch (pressure) affects the currently selected Zone. Aftertouch is on by default. Turn the knob above ‘Channel Pressure’ to choose between on and off.

Question: say I have “big” elektron box (OT, RY, A4) that I want send Clock and Program Change information to a “small” elektron box (DT, DN), but also want to input MIDI notes into the “small” box from the SL MKiii.

Given the Midi signal flow “big” box -> SL -> “small” box, has anyone successfully developed a template on the SL that will simultaneously receive and transmit those Program Changes?

Trying to plan a workflow with a friend using this gear. I know we could likely send DIN and USB Midi simultaneously to the “small” box from the other two, but say we don’t have access to a USB cable that has a B connector on both ends (because currently, we don’t).

I use overbridge clock for everything via USB and have a midi out from the DN to send midi clock to the SL midi in for its arp/sequencer…
then have midi out sent from SL to the hardware for notes

The sl has its own midi clock that can be sent to the rest if just using regular midi din
I send program changes by USB via the computer to sync pattern changes, it’s possible to set up custom templates to send program changes but I’ve not tried this…

Don’t thinks it’s possible to send midi via USB B to USB B…I wouldn’t recommend it
Maybe You could use a midi merge box to merge the midi out & thru from the SL?

MIDI Merge would be my ultimate solution, just trying to see if I can get this going without any extra equipment (using this set-up tomorrow). I was hoping to send program changes + clock from my Rytm to my friend’s DN to keep pattern changes organized without the computer while still having the SL in the mix, but I guess we might have to just swap MIDI cables between composition and jamming.

The SL MkIII will not do this.

If you have an OT or if you were willing to use the DN or DT (not AR or AF) as the first Elektron instrument in your chain and any Elektron instrument as the second (including AR and AF), then you can achieve what you want. There are various scenarios but the basic way is as follows:

Physical connections:

  • connect SL MIDI Out 1 to first Elektron (“E1”, either OT, DN, or DT) MIDI In port
  • connect E1 MIDI Out to second Elektron (“E2”, any Elektron instrument) MIDI In

On the E2 instrument:

  • set the AUTO CHANNEL to a particular MIDI channel number
  • set the Program Change receive channel to a particular number

On the E1 instrument:

  • set the AUTO CHANNEL to a particular MIDI channel number
  • set one MIDI sequencer track to transmit on the AUTO channel number that you set above for E2
  • set the Program Change send channel to match the PC receive channel you set for E2

On the SL MkIII:

  • send MIDI note messages from the MIDI Out 1 port on E1’s AUTO channel number

With this setup:

  • E1 will send MIDI PC messages to E2 to change its pattern, and
  • if you select the MIDI sequencer track on E1 that sends to E2 and select your target track on E2, then the SL’s MIDI note output will be routed to the target track sound on E2.

To play a different track sound on E2 from the SL keyboard, just select the track on E2 without any need to fiddle with settings or channel numbers.

Haven’t visited the forum in a minute. How are all of you doing? Hopefully hanging in there, despite this insane pandemic.

I still love my SL MK3. Absolutely love it. It gets better every week, haha.

That firmware update 1.4 is INSANELY cool with the 8 independent arps. I had a field day with that, but haven’t messed with it, since.

I’m so glad more companies are implementing probability. It makes things so much fun. It all started with the Launchkey Mini MK3… which had mutate/deviate. Why the HELL hasn’t Novation added this to the SL MK3? This is the flagship, isn’t it?

Still on my wishlist (and MANY other people)… Components editor… allowing for selecting multiple pads/knobs/faders and ALLOWING a “change across all” thing. Like NI’s Controller Editor. Change Midi Channel. Change from CC to Midi note, vice-versa. One at a time is my personal idea of hell.

MORE BANKS of encoders PER TEMPLATE. Two is not enough. Four would be great. Fader banks? I think we need more than one, yeah? How about those arrows next to the encoder banks… which change the faders at the same time… I don’t know.

MORE BANKS of the 16 buttons PER TEMPLATE. 16 buttons is not enough.

That said, still dig it.

How are all of you thinking of it, months later?

I really don’t need more groundbreaking implementation/changes.

The only two things I really would need changed/improved are:

  • Let us change names of Sessions when saving without Components.
  • There is a Tempo bug where a Sessions saved tempo does not change the tempo when the SL is master clock.

What do SL MK3 owners think of the keybed?
