SIDs for sale !?

Meeblip seem to have uncovered a bunch of SID chips…
Just thought I’d mention in case anyone fancies building a MIDIbox SID or whatever…

I built one myself recently and it took a while to find enough SID chips on ebay.

If you’re reasonably handy with a soldering iron… I can thoroughly recommend making one of these beasts…

here’s mine!

Oh heck yeah! Insta-buy! I’m gonna build a SID-based module for my modular and another for a friend. Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

Man, this is a deep rabbit hole, it seems. One worth exploring though, as I’m a sucker for a good project that makes use of old gear. Any idea how much the components for an MB6582 cost?

I was too afraid to total it up properly, but I reckon it cost me somewhere around £500 to complete it with 8 SIDs in… and took about 2-3 months to finish.

That’s if you can find someone to buy a faceplate from rather than get a one off done, that might add a bit. (I got mine from here and it looks like he has them left- http://thebeast.co.uk/?product=mb6582bw)

So it kinda costs as much as a basic synth does… but it is a really fantastic synth/drum machine. I love lo-fi sounds, but I love it and have barely scratched the surface with it yet.

You kinda have to do a bit of searching around for details and stuff, but there are still a few people around on the MIDIbox Sid forum that gave me loads of help, and there’s a fair amount of documentation…
You can always build one with only 2 SIDs in to begin with (or there are simpler MIDIBox SID projects on their site too)

probably not for beginners tbh. But a great project.

Wow, I didn’t realize the MB6582 took up to 8 chips. I thought one could pick up a SID chip and build up a monosynth around it. I’ll pass for now.

yeah, you can do that too (although having two chips is good as you can then have it in stereo)- the MB6582 is a really pumped up special version of the basic MIDIBox SID project (it works with 2 SIDs, but 8 SIDs gives you either four separate stereo voices, or up to 4 note polyphony with Six oscillators per note)

I reckon you can probably do the single chip version for about £100 tbh.

The SammichSID was basically a kit version of a 2 chip MIDIbox SID.
