Another evening passes with a great view.

How do you get the depth on clouds like that? I try to photograph good clouds when I see them and they very often come out flattened.

That was probably thanks to the Nikon P900  It was just a quick snapshot with no post-processing and “Auto-Mode” on the Nikon. I had just stepped out onto the balcony and saw this beautiful formation in the distance, and the light seems pretty good. Depth is strongly influenced by the lighting conditions. For example, if you have bright, lit clouds in the foreground and faded clouds further away in the background, you can achieve this depth. You could certainly help it out in Photoshop and play with the contrast. One thing is perhaps also worth mentioning. I’m no specialist, but if you photograph clouds and aim directly upwards, the bright light from above could make the contrast in your image appear somewhat paler. In my photo, thanks to the Nikon’s zoom (x83), I was able to hold the camera straight ahead from the balcony (5-7 meters above ground), so there was no harsh light that could reflect. However, it was already dusk and there wouldn’t have been much light to reflect. A hood on the front of the lens could also help prevent light from reflecting into the lens, which can result in pale photos. I have a large hood on the Nikon.

Not exactly a window, but the view from the top of the volcano.
iPhone cam only, no retouching.

Ahh, I’d figured out you needed a light and dark side. My problem it seems is that I have to look up to see clouds. I live in LA, so if I look out there’s almost always something blocking the view. I also am just using an iphone, so I don’t think I have no 83x zoom XD

I don’t want to clog this up with too much stuff that isn’t from my window (though most of these are from my backyard at various times). One of these doesn’t have clouds, but in that case I think the compression of the depth worked in my favor.

I beg you all too keep that a schtick in the thread where it was found. It’s caused enough havoc as it is

The reflections in our neighbour’s windows looked spooky yesterday evening.

Our roof looks like a pyramid.
