Here’s a small travel modular rack I made recently. Soon I will be able to visit my family for the first time since january 2020 and I made this to bring with me.

Modular case with led strip on top and spare room to fit a beatstep pro underneath. Cheap mdf wood. Tried Plastidip spray (for car rims) white on outside and black inside. No groundlayer needed, still flawless after 2 years.

haha thanks mate

It’s the kind of thing I’d love to make at some point, but there’s no way in hell I’m taking apart my Virus C. Hahaha.

I might do the very same setup. That’s perfect!

Yeah, cutting up the virus was very anxiety inducing! I originally planned to make a custom faceplate so I could at least just keep hold of the original chassis for it, but after 3 failed lasercutting attempts I just took a dremel to it, and luckily didn’t fuck it up!

Hahha. I did the Analog Four multiout mod and had replaced the amps in an OTMKI with a buddy of mine. I know I COULD do it, but I still refuse to risk it! How much does it weigh? I watched the video of your walkthrough yesterday. So awesome.

That is a sensible move tbh.

It weighs about 9kg. Could be a lot less, but it’s manageable. I’m working on an idea for a new iteration which does away with the octatrack’s heavy metal chassis, and will be using plastic instead of wood for a lot of the custom parts. I also want to add a larger screen as the 7" one is pretty fiddly, as well as some additional I/O etc.

Oooooof. 20lbs! Def. a bit on the heavy side for daily commuting

Also, to make it lighter, if you can get a CNC/milling machine, you can actually mill out a honeycomb pattern into the parts of the wood that don’t need to have anything directly attached to them. This can cut down on weight will still keeping it plenty strong. Let me know if that makes sense.

Yeah, incidentally by the time I finished it I had gone full-time work-from-home, so it didn’t really matter that much anyway

Honeycomb pattern is a smart idea. I actually just got a 3D printer to help with making lightweight chassis components. Figured I might have a go at using sheets of polycarbonate for the outer box, with 3d printed ABS fittings to hold it all together and mount PCBs etc. Should save a load of weight, especially once I’ve dropped the OT chassis.

Not fancy, but I built a riser out of old hockey sticks to elevate my back-row K2, DN, and Pro-1. I added some velcro loops under it to help manage excess cable length, and it’s pretty easy to pull the front row out for maintenance, power on/off, etc.

Next build will be something to get my TD3, Geode, MM2, and some pedals (not pictured) into a more workable setup

Lovely.

Very cool. You could make a mint off those.

Thanks!

I already do… see my website: www.iwanopmaat.nl

Just found a cool way of getting a custom riser built - many fabrication companies make parts to spec. I ordered two aluminum u-shaped parts to essentially make two risers for my live-case. Ordered “u-profile” , which i will invert so the U is upside down as a riser shelf.

Def take your measurements and double check. They kind of assume you want to make a long rail, which isnt the orientation i want, so i I made the “Side B” of the U longer (as it’s for me the width) and the “length” (which is really the depth) quite short, so that it looks more like a desktop laptop riser/shelf (as most of my cables in the case run front to back.) Ordered two to put side by side, because I was worried that it would flex with a longer shelf width.

Set me back 60€ including shipping, which is really not that bad! Also used an online calculator to estimate the weight of the aluminum.

(Bamboo mayyyy have been a cheaper option here - this is another .5kg in an already quite heavy case, but I plan on slowly migrating towards a lighter USB hub and figuring out some kind of DC power solution that will require fewer power bricks and a smaller power strip…)

Tagging @klaustrophil as i think you might find this interesting:)

I didn’t knew that such thread exist. Cool things here. But not a lot of custom. Are the Elektronauts not fan of workshop activities ?

I bring my first mini eurorack case. I already post here on “Share something” thread, yesterday :

My wonder was a 70’s hifi style. Far from perfect, but i’m very happy with the result, a cool erzats

Edit : now i must do a light sanding, a polish and some brown wax.
