Sequencing Melodies with the chromatic keyboard

Hi, I am learning and having lots of fun on the digitakt but struggling to find a way to sequence Melodies using the chromatic keyboard. I understand I can record live the melody into my sequence, but are there any methods to step sequence the melody similar to how you would sequence a non-melodic sample in record mode? Apologies if this is posted incorrectly. Thanks!

Hi, do you know how to parameter lock a note to the step? Or is it that you’re trying to hear the note play as you apply it to the step before committing to it, just not in live record?

I generally just lock the notes to the steps manually, hold down a trig and change the note parameter from the track note to my desired notes using the A encoder on the trig page.

Try step record mode while on keyboard mode.

I usually use live recording mode and edit with grid recording mode.

Step Recording is interesting too.

Thanks for the response! I just watched a video on this by Braintree56 on YouTube and that seems like a good way record in on the grid and then modify the notes per step. I’m going to give this a go tomorrow now.

I find it much easier with an external keyboard. In grid mode you can hold down a step then press the note on the keyboard and it will save to the step.

I like the sound of this too! I have an akai mpk mini midi controller I will give this a go

I had an irrational fear that editing a live recorded step in grid mode would quantise it! I will try this and also thanks for the gentle reminder I need to print out the manual !! I bought my box secondhand and didn’t get one in the sale.

Microtiming is kept if you edit a note, or copy a trig. Worth a try.
If you have a musical idea while playing with internal keyboard I think live recording is the fastest way. You can quantize directly or apply a quantize % per track or pattern.

There are quick start manuals only in boxes.
