Is there a sequencer like the Oxi One or Hapax with velocity touch pads? I’m surprised these cost a grand but no velocity while I have a $100 Alesis controller where all the pads are velocity sensitive. Major pain on the Oxi to have to specify volume for every note (so Fruity Loops, which I got away from) and then if you change the global velocity it changes everything (instead of increasing or decreasing)
Update:
Ok just went to the Oxi forum to complain in the “feature requests” section. For clarification, I’ll paste that post here:
I’m still learning so could be a training issue, but so far my biggest gripe is dealing with velocity when recording in Keyboard/Piano mode, adjusting volume for mono bass line notes, and adjusting global volume.
I would like the pads to be touch sensitive like they are on some drum machines (such as the Lm Drum) and keyboard controllers (such as the Alesis VI line). If I record something, I don’t want to have to go back and set the volume for the performance. Yes, I can attach a keyboard, but sometimes if I’m on the go it’s one more thing to carry. Also, playing on the grid is unique, such as when you’re wanting to stretch out your voicings.
The other part is that when I adjust the global velocity, it resets the velocity for everything in the track. You should be able to set the min and max non-destructively with separate knobs, which would be conducive for performing. Some synth patches (and multisamples), for example, have the filter open the harder you play. Maybe I’m just doing it wrong? Also there should be a knob for augmenting or decreasing the current values non-destructively instead of resetting everything on the track.
Also, I find the holding down the Y button and scrolling with the knob terrible for performing or even editing a track. Having a column of buttons where each button corresponds to each octave (C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7) would be an excellent quick way to get around the grid.
So, what specifically do you need it to do? Linnstrument has MPE velocity sensitive pads with a sequencer and can capture velocity in real time, but the sequencer only has 2 tracks.
Akai MPC devices function as a sequencer and controller with full velocity sensitivity and aftertouch or any of the 16 levels functions and has many tracks and other capabilities but it won’t really do what a hapax or oxi one does and that’s why people still buy those products.
What specifically do you want the sequencer to do? I’m not sure which other sequencers have velocity sensitive pads other than like, a beatstep pro. I’m sure that there are some but I’d outline what features you’re looking for so that it’s not just people naming sequencers and you shooting them down because they don’t do what you want.
Obviously, the ones in question don’t have direct velocity input so they aren’t an option without an external controller.
Elektron Rytm and Ableton Move have a sequencers with velocity sensitive pads, neither are amazingly powerful midi sequencers though like Oxi One and co.
When adding a step manually to Move it doesn’t read the velocity from hitting the pad unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your preference), but maybe that could be changed in an update.
To be able to record in keyboard view mode on the Oxi One but with velocity sensitivity. I should have gone to the Oxi forum lol. Actually about to go there now.
I suppose I can connect a keyboard (I sometimes do) but if you want to take the Oxi on the go, it’s one more thing to carry.
In any case, playing on a grid is very different than on a keyboard or drum pads. You can stretch out a finger and play a note a few octaves up to spread your voicings
In community firmware deluge got new options for velocity : pads are not sensitive but it’s really quick and easy to program velocity. You have a 16 level of velocity for each sample like on mpc.
Just wanted to mention that I did not have a good experience with LM drum and returned it, although as a basic drum machine I’m sure that it’s fine. Midi and sequencing capabilities are remedial at best.
I don’t think it would be better than any of the other proposed options but I also think Roland MC-101 can sequence like 4 midi tracks and has velocity sensitive pads.
Circling back to what you said before, I wouldn’t want to carry the extra controller around for a sequencer that I wanted to be portable either, but it’s lookin pretty grim for options on ultra-capable sequencers with built in velocity sensitive pads lol.
