Scrooge - Wild Semi-modular from Neutral Labs

ha - also convieniently just sold some gear on ebay for exactly the same price as the kit, so consdering taking both of those things as a sign and ordering one now.

I assume from the above q’s on MIDI that it doesn’t respond to Program Change? Is that a “yet” potentially? Just curious!

Hi, how difficult is the kit to solder together for someone with zero soldering experience?

Sure, that can (and will) eventually come in a firmware upgrade.

Ideally you’d have at least some experience, but if you’re motivated and diligent, it’s certainly possible. You can check out the build guide on the Scrooge website to see what you’ll need to do.

sold!

(also what do they put in the water in Leipzig? between you and Jahtari I’m imagining it’s a lofi noise wonderland

I think that’s just regular water from our local river.

It works well on extremely low tempo too.

absolutely loving mine so far… if we’re allowed to make cheeky firmware requests, my #1 would be being able to divide down the incoming MIDI clock.
Dunno how feasible that is, but it sounds AWESOME dropping it to half tempo using the select-your-own-PPQ clock out from my Blackbox and it would be amazing to be able to set up the same from things that only have MIDI out.

Otherwise, no notes, I love it.

Glad you’re having fun with it.

Yes, clock division is absolutely doable and has already been requested a couple of times. It should be in the next firmware update.

brilliant, it sounds so good sort of grindcoring it’s way halfspeed under a breakbeat!

New video by Jon Gee with Elmyra 2 and Scrooge:

PSA: Some users have reported sync issues with some specific hardware (Beatstep Pro, Oxi One, Metropolix), when Scrooge is being synced to those. The other way around seems to work fine. I’m aware of the issue and it should be fixed in a firmware update soon. I just have to get my hands on one of those devices and reproduce it. I’ve tested with Elektron gear, an SQ-1 and a bunch of Eurorack modules and all were working fine.

And another PSA: There are some stock shortages right now at retailers. The demand after launch was crazy, so I was not well prepared. New stock is on the way though, and all should be restocked before the end of the month.

There is a test review in Amazona.

( Using Google translate works. )

Here’s a prototype firmware upgrade that should fix the MIDI sync issues for all devices, and maybe also the clock sync issues for some of them. The clock/reset fix is still being worked on, but feel free to test this: Scrooge downloads - Neutral Labs

Happy to report that a new firmware update is now available that should fix the sync issues for all devices, both using MIDI and clock/reset. This is still experimental, because it hasn’t been tested extensively. It does however completely fix all sync issues with all the gear I was able to test it with. Feel free to give it a go and report back.

great, will give it a go!

Also, if I had another firmware dream request… is it possible to have “Copy Page” somehow?
Super useful to be able to make a one pager and then copy it and develop the other pages…

defintiely seems more stable responding to MIDI start/stop now, thanks!

Yes, it has been requested by others as well. I’ll implement that in a future firmware update.

Great, thanks for testing it. Some users are reporting that while it’s more stable now, Scrooge seems to be a tiny bit ahead when using MIDI from certain devices. I’ll have to check that, and possibly upload another firmware. I’ll post here if I do.

ah yes - I do seem to be getting the “slightly ahead” thing when syncing from my Digitakt unfortunately.

thanks for working on a fix!

I just received my Scrooge last week and have been experimenting with all the different sounds it can generate…I’m loving it! Ive not needed to program any patterns as the the random pattern generator is consistently giving great results; any insight on behind the scenes of how it generates patterns?

I also love generating gates from the Pluto which has 5 clock division pulses perfect for pairing
