Scrooge - Wild Semi-modular from Neutral Labs

Here’s a strange new semi-modular sequencer percussionish synth – Scrooge.

  • 5 distinct analog voices
  • device can work passively without a power supply if sequenced from external gear
  • each voice can be routed to either of 2 main outputs (headphone compatible)
  • individual voice outputs
  • individual voice CV inputs that respond well to audio signals
  • 2 modulation tracks, individually routable to voices
  • 2 modulation CV inputs
  • onboard step sequencer
    • parameter locking per step
    • “control all” mode (change parameters for several steps and tracks at once), great for interactive playing
    • arbitrary step length per track (up to 64 steps)
    • generative algorithm builds random variations on patterns (available while performing), or creates random patterns from scratch
    • pattern chaining (up to 32 patterns)
    • stores up to 128 patterns in 16 banks
    • microtiming
    • CV slew limiter per track
  • can sequence external gear
  • sync output
  • sync and reset inputs
  • MIDI input (TRS type A)

You may think of the Landscape Noon in comparison.

Available now. Can be bought in the 42HP Eurorack or in a case version.

I was going to make a post, you beat me to it.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

Mylar video on Scrooge was just released:

I’ve seen the teases on Instagram, but this mylarmelodies video is just great. Very interested in this device, speaking as a happy Elmyra 2 owner…

Thanks.

Here’s another one by Starsky Carr, covering some of the aspects that Mylar didn’t go into:

this is super cool, first semi modular thing that has caught my attention. that mylarmelodies video sold me…i want one! this is my gateway gear into glitch music

Thanks.

Since we’re on Elektronauts, I should mention that Elektron users should feel right at home with the parameter locks and control all. I love the Elektron approach to sequencing, and tried to replicate that while developing the sequencer part of Scrooge.

any chance Patchwerks will be a retailer like they were for the Elmyra? they’ve been having a rough go of it recently but i saw they moved to a smaller space so im hoping their distribution capability is getting better

I don’t usually deal with the retailers directly, it all goes through my distributor, but I’ll ask. If they’re back, I assume that would work, or maybe it’s already planned.

I did a wee video too (lol, just kidding, it’s quite long because I’m incapable of brevity!).

I really like this this thing, and the workflow is “Elektronesque, with a twist” (and having control-all be a buffer that you can switch on and off is genius).

Anyway, this is a full beat from scratch (with some explainers at the start) which hopefully can give a really good feel for the sounds and the workflow.

Oh, and to justify posting it here, I’m running the outputs through the Octatrack for mixing and FX!

Congrats man. Looks really fun.

Sorry if this is redundant but I haven’t had a chance to finish the video yet. I don’t see any of the printed information reference whether or not the midi capability is just triggering notes or if any of Scrooge’s parameters or velocity can be controlled?

Neither, MIDI is just clock and transport (start/stop) right now. MIDI note capability might be added later by firmware. It’s a bit tricky, since the step parameters will not easily map to MIDI information, but I’ll come up with something.

With voltages interacting I’m sure that it would not be very straightforward trying to implement midi parameter controls, but while it looks super fun to play as an instrument (with your hands on the device), to be able to sequence it from something else when necessary (even just notes) would be an incredibly valuable utility for pairing with other gear.

This looks so cool, I dig the aesthetics of it too. Sliders are my favorite!

Wow, cool!

This could be the unexpected but very attractive mobile groove box I looked out for a long time.

The Scrooge is wild and weird, but so performable and fun. Really refreshingly unapologetic about having a particular sound, and not trying to satisfy everyone. I really dig how much it just sounds like electricity, for lack of a better term.

Its control-all also adds a lot to a live performance with something that has more static sequencing, like the DTII.

Really fun machine!

Aw yes Jay, that’s a great jam! :+1:

Glad you’re getting along with Scrooge.

oh gosh, this looks so up my street it’s not true.

With a name like @the_duckchild it’s hardly surprising that you would see something in Scrooge.
