SB-1 Space Bee

Just to clear something up, the post you quoted me on was from last week, when they had fulfilled all the orders and had some in stock. So there wouldn’t be a 5 year wait, or any wait. They might still have some in stock, but I don’t know, I haven’t checked.

Its not really a like for like comparison though

The SB01 is pretty much on the shortlist if you want a very thin rechargeable analogue synthesizer (with live performance sequencer)! If the battery life is really 24 hours as stated that quite impressive, also, its pretty!

1999 USD is pricey- but I own an OP1F and an OPXY so I will just STFU!

PS- also just noticed it comes with a ’ keytar grip’ that offers 3-axis accelerometer control…heck, its starting to look like a bargain

Maybe? I feel like some eneloops and a decent charger would get you there on the OG. Or, I mean, maybe use the $800 you’d save on an original with cool case to buy 375 disposable batteries? Those would last you a while.

And it’s definitely true the SB-1 is roughly half the thickness and weight of the OG. I just don’t know of anyone whose hang up with the 101 was it being too thick or heavy. Seems like the more relevant measurement is “surface area taken up”, which is about the same between them.

It is, of course, nice to have a thoroughly modern build with modern parts and design. And surely maintenance of original 101s must be getting expensive and should be factored in. But the SB-1 story was much more interesting to me back when they were promising to make it less expensive than buying a used 101, and that ship seems to have sailed.

Yup- its high end pricing- even the web site looks like they are trying to be a bit ‘TE’ - I still can’t help but lust after it though! ned to see that ‘performance sequencer’ in use…

Edited to just say I’m not a fan of so much reverb in general and I would have liked to hear the tone of the SB 1 w/o it…

Apologies to @Tchu if this is their video, I didn’t mean to attack anyone.

I’m personally looking forward to a video of someone sending it though some distortion and fuzz!

For the record, it’s not my video. Sorry for the disturbance.

It’s one of the first musical video I see about this Synth.

All apologies accepted.

It must have been posted before but it’s a good reminder to watch. I think it’s a good thing to know where the SB-1 comes from.

As an example, in this video they are talking about a 10-hours battery (now, I’ve heard 24-hours battery).

Well you might be in luck, because I had my old Big Muff out tonight. Audio only though, no video.

Just tweaking a simple sequence with the Big Muff hooked up to the SB-1.

I guess for reference I should add on something similar that is SB-1 only. Nothing gain matched or anything fancy, just a little similar to the Muff take, but clean.

When I tried it at Superbooth I felt the sequencer buttons were very stiff and a bit hard to press.

How do you feel about them after using for a while?

Thanks.

Fair question, especially considering that others have noted the keyboard keys having that same “stiff” feel to them. One would wonder if that’s just the natural inclination of the synth or if it starts to break in a bit (which actually might not be a good sign as far as an indication of parts longevity).

This summer I have been working hard on rewriting the entire SB01 firmware from the ground up to address reported MIDI issues and to allow us to add new and previously planned features.

A beta has been available for some time now and I hope you have had the chance to test it.

If you haven’t yet tried the beta, please do so and send feedback to support[at]playsuperlative.com if you have any kind of problem. A limited closed beta has been running before this and the current open beta is considered stable and fully featured. See the change log at firmware.playsuperlative.com for more details about what’s new.

All general MIDI issues and USB MIDI issues should be resolved in the current beta release. We are down to ~30µs latency on USB MIDI. TRS MIDI is just limited by baud rate at this point and the performance should be on par with the best MIDI implementations out there.

PS:
I am the firmware developer.
None of us in the Superlative team are active forum members.

We are working on a “news” page to do centralized announcements away from Instagram, which has been — and still is — the main source of information from the company.

I sincerely hope you get the chance to test the beta. It offers some amazing new features!
If you find any issues with it, we very much appreciate feedback — it will get us to a full release much faster.

Heads-up for anyone in the UK after one of these, I wasn’t watching this eBay listing but got sent an offer of £1130 anyway.

I reckon that’s probably a pretty solid deal given it’s now $2000, plus shipping, plus import duty etc.

until there are some decent sounddemos available this is out of my interest, unfortunately. last video on youtube is an “Unboxing” from Nick Kwas, and he finished with “ok, next Video is guess gonna be playing it”…no video since 3 month…not really common i think.

so…please send one to loopop for a real “check”…i guess this would be the best marketing for it.

Hi Danny,

Just sending a unit to a YouTuber isn’t enough anymore I’m afraid. Anything doing with PR has a serious price tag attached. Absolutely no ill will against the excellent YouTube synth reviewers and influencers, but the simple fact is that they need to make a living, and their living is mostly payed by the manufacturers of the gear they demo. No YouTube video is free for the manufacturer.

I absolutely share your sentiment though. We need some real demo videos. I’ve spoken to Ben about it several times and he absolutely wants to create some good quality videos on YouTube. What’s holding us back at the moment is time and manpower. Good production value is not cheap and it takes real talent.

In the meanwhile you will have better luck finding demos on Instagram. Here are a couple:

https://www.instagram.com/p/DO0_s2iCC3O/

There are many more on Instagram but I am only allowed to have two links per post on the forum :disappointed:

Important note: I speak for myself, I do not speak for Superlative. Only Ben can do that. I’m the firmware developer. I consult and help.

The first physical store to sell the SB01 is Perfect Circuit. More stores are likely to be added around the world in time. The absolute best thing to do when bying an instrument is to demo it yourself when possible — at least that’s what I do personally.
Keep an eye out! Perhaps there’s even a chance to meet at a trade show?

If you are in Norway, come pay me a visit!

Weird I have been keeping an eye on prices but eBay will not let me see this one in search. Maybe because I’m in the US.

I think for the synth, any power supply incompatibility shouldn’t matter bc the power is still USB-C…

Edit: Yep, in the countries they’ll ship to it doesn’t include US. They made me an offer though, maybe they didn’t know.
