Sampling iphone into Octatrack

Hey guys,

First post here, just got an Octatrack and was looking for some help. So I’ve been trying to sample my iphone through the pick up machines. I’m getting sound but the signal is horribly degraded with a ton of artifacts. Now i’m using a an 1/8 inch AUX cable with a 1/4 inch adapter going into input A on my octatrack. I think my problem is that i’m sending a stereo signal into the the single(mono) input A of the octatrack. To make this work correctly would I need to get some sort of stereo break out cable for my iphone, I’m guessing an 1/8 inch to two 1/4 inch? Anyway any help would be appreciated!

I have a digitakt and it does not exhibit this behaviour but that is expected because it folds all stereo samples into mono anyway. Just working on trying to get to most out of my octatrack and sampling off my iphone in stereo would be nice when in not at my home studio.

Thanks

A simple 1/8" to 1/4" adapter cable should be fine - that is how we sampled my Nintendo 3DS into the Octatrack at the Octatrack workshop in Milwaukee a few years ago. Allerian or whoever else attended feel free to correct me there. The 3DS has a significantly lower output level than the iPhone, btw.

Try checking off these items:

  1. Timestretch is turned off/disabled
  2. Gain param is set to an appropriate level
  3. Make sure your outputs are properly set up, as well as output levels.
  4. No FX in either FX slot (add the FX after you’re sure that sampling is working).

Make sure your lead is like this -

You can see the small end has 3 contacts. Gnd, L, R.

Then each of the 1/4 inch jacks are mono and contain GND+ L channel or other one is GND +R channel.
This should sort you out. Then you can even sample as stereo if you want…

Also you dont want to be using one like this other one as both the LR will be shorted and fed into OT. -

One of the ways I get audio off my phone and tablet is a Korg PlugKey. It’s pretty cool.

It takes audio from the lightning port rather than the headphone jack. And it’s got two 1/4" outputs to send to the OT inputs. Unfortunately, only MIDI in…

One extra nice feature is that it has a power in so you can charge your device while you’re using it :+1:

Hey, thanks for the advice everyone, I ended up getting the cable s3kn0tr0n1c recommended and it ended up working perfectly.
