Because the OT can manipulate audio in such dramatic ways, I find myself sampling all sorts of things, with no real aim in mind. Sure it’s fun to see what you get, but it is a time killer in the long run. What do you guys look for in sample sources to get YOUR signature sound (or types of sounds) and block out the noise?
A better question might be are there certain things you absolutely will not sample because it won’t yield positive results
A lot of the times I look for simple things like a beautiful single note held out. You can use the Octatrack to make a crazy lead out of it, programming pitch bends etc.
I do sample denser material as well, but as a general rule, the more that’s there already, the less room I have to take it somewhere new.
But really, I sample anything. I like to play with the amp settings…a quick stab of a sound can recontextualize it nicely.
Because of the possibilities of this machine, anything is to be sampled. As you said, it can take a lot of precious time. So i think that its necessary to first try anything to see the fields that can be reach, and then focus about the sound you want to produce. If you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to produce, then play around with the fact of sampling, at the end you will find some pleasant stuff to construct songs. Personaly, after have sampled a lot of material from youtube (no music, just real world sounds) i now only sample my other gear in view to apply what i learn with OT and produce what i wanted to do before owned one.
Good stuff
Nothing comes to mind that I actually avoid, but I’ve had great results from old jazz records with a singer or a lead horn, plus stuff from the “Exotica, Unclassifiable” section at the used record store. Also streaming radio, either high-brow public radio programs, or some awful talk station that runs obnoxious ads.
i think any source is great for sampling. for example, i ran my key along my radiator [both metal] and created a nice rattling bell effect with that.
hmm, well i guess the one thing i never sample from are other songs.
sampling voices from old 1940-1960 films is highly fun though xD
after playing with the OT, i know that any simply sample can be a different material after tweaking.
a kick with filter thru a reverb with little LFO and it’s a ambiant sound.
i have a paper and pencil when tweaking and note what work for me.
so for me use simlpe sample, and apply my tweaking and i have my signature sound.
Here is a tip that may keep you in sample material for the rest of your life: Archive.org
