Sample or sync other synths?

I am trying to streamline my workflow on the Rytm, which will be my go to box for the coming year (made this contract with myself to fight off GAS and to really familiarize myself with one machine)

Found that when I bring in other gear I already own, 9 out of 10 times the Model:Cycles is king.

I am curious about the workflow of other Rytm-users: do you sample everything into the AR or do you use synths like the Cycles in combination with the AR to build a set/track? And what are the (dis)advantages?

For myself, I’m leaning to sampling but I sometimes struggle with (cutting) longer loops. Also haven’t found a good way to silence looping samples when muting tracks.

Really like to hear about your experiences!

I don’t have a RYTM but I do have a DT that is kinda my centerpiece. I don’t use the DT for drums. It either sequencers or samples are my “synth” sounds much of the time.

If I’m sampling little snippets from YouTube, my records, CDs etc that all goes into the DT immediately because I want to mangle those sounds and the only way to change the source material is inside the DT anyway. If I’m coming up with sequence on my Monostation I hold off because its a PITA to re-record and make sure the new recording works with what I’ve already done in the Monostation. And for me, often, it isn’t even worth recording into the DT since it’ll end up in my DAW anyway. I’m more likely to sample a C3 note from the Monostation into the DT and go from there BUT on the other hand sampling a loop from the Monostation opens up other possibilities inside the DT.

I know this doesn’t directly explain the advantages and disadvantages. My answer is it just depends on what you are going for.

In your situation, based on what you posted, I feel like I’d keep the M:C live so you have more tracks available on the AR for other things. Unless you are looking to mangle loops and sound with the AR. Its a balance. I’m not good at it but try to think out and have a plan of what you want to accomplish before you start and that’ll answer these questions for you.

If you rely on the same exact process each time, that’ll lead you toward similar results.

Thx.

Yeah, a too rigid workflow indeed has a danger of doing too much of the same stuff every time.

And one advantage of keeping the Cycles live: it’s one of the best machines to improvise and create happy accidents.
